Can I fly home once a month?

Hello...

Starting 2nd year this year, thinking about clinical rotations. Worried about if it's realistic to fly "home" once a month once rotations start.

This would be if I don't get my first choice in rotation sites. Is there time for this? Or are schedules and workload unpredictable and overwhelming?

Any input...thanks🙂

It really depends. Some schools require you to round on your patients 7 days a week. My school only requires us to be at the hospital M-F and the weekend days we are on call. (Most of our rotations we do not take overnight call, so we don't have to return the following morning to see patients if it's on a weekend.)

You will get a schedule that will tell you when you're on call, what days you must see your patients, etc. So you will know what days you will have free.

It's going to be expensive to fly out on a Friday night and come back Sunday afternoon (provided you are not on call the entire weekend).

As Geek Medic pointed out, it all depends on your hospital and your med school's policy. How far would you be flying? Why are you doing rotations so far away from home?

At my hospital (currently doing Medicine), we get every Sunday off, and call is q5.
