Can I get a quick verification that this is BS?

I went to my freshmen orientation today, and while I was trying to sign up for a Calculus class, my advisor said that after 2012, medical schools won't accept Calculus as a Math requirement; and she suggested that I sign up for precalculus instead.

Naturally, I thought this was complete BS, but I just want a quick verification from my friends here. 😀

Some schools will require stats, but I don't think they'll drop calc. Either way, if you're going to major in a science you should take calc.

Probably for good reason. It's a bit unsettling to think that some doctors don't have a basic understanding of statistics.

I know some med schools are opting for calc 1 and stats as their math req rather than a full year of calc, but I don't think they will be dropping calc as a requirement anytime soon. Calc 1 is a beautiful form mathematics with its own merits. I personally enjoyed Calc 1 quite a bit

If you are applying to just texas schools, I guess you won't be needing calc, but many other schools require it/recommend it at the very least.

I'd like to add that I have Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra credits.

I'm having to take Stats this summer because of this.

So, could I have possibly applied with College Algebra, Stats I, and Pre-Cal? I'm taking Calc I right now, but I was just curious if I could have pulled that off? Especially with me deciding to be an Applied Statistics minor.

You would've been fine. Schools that require calculus are very much a minority. Some recommend, but few require.

It's not that they won't accept Calculus over another math class, it's just that less will be specifically requiring Calculus, while more are requiring Statistics. If a school has a general requirement of, say, "1 year of mathematics coursework including a Statistics course" obviously they'll accept Stat + Calc I as well as Stat + OtherMathCourse.
