For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a physician. I graduated 5 yrs. ago with a B.S. in biology and barely got out alive. My lack of focus and laziness earned me both a cumulative and science GPA below a 2.5. Due to my low GPA I was also discouraged to pursue a career in science. After graduation I worked in retail management and soon discovered that my true calling was to become a doctor. Now, I have deep regrets about the mistakes I’ve made towards my chances in being accepted into a medical school. I’m now wondering if I should just re-take most of my science courses over or try to get into a post-baccalaureate program. I have no obligations holding me back from doing this thing the right way this time. I just want to know if a second chance really exists in order for my dream to come true.

It's definitely possible and you've come to the right forum. However, you can count on spending a pretty penny and a lot of time digging yourself out.

Also, I should note that there are different types of medical schools with varying degrees of difficulty in getting in. Generally catagorized, 1) allopathic US schools, 2) osteopathic US schools, and 3) allopathic foreign (i.e. Caribbean) schools. Knowing your goal will help you better plan your comeback.

don't worry there are plenty of us in the same boat as you. I am in the process of "digging myself out" and I cant tell you how happy I am ALREADY because I'm finally going towards this goal. Dont give up, and focus primarily on getting back into undergraduate school and taking more classes. Get your undergrad gpa, and as much of your science gpa, up as close as possible to a 3.0. then, apply to SMPs (special masters program). They accept students with undergrad gpas 3.0+ and strong MCAT scores (mid thirties ). Once in, you can prove yourself if you have what it takes to handle medical course work.

Hope that gives you some information on the next step. I am by no means an expert and have received any information I know from some very nice people on this forum. Best of luck to you.

How competitive is a 3.2 GPA? For Post Bacc I mean....? I have taken many Bio's and gem chem 1. Nursing major. GRE 1000+. No MCAT.

Thanks so much guys for all of your help. I now know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. :-D
