Can I get into neurosurgery residency??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wanted to go because I do not want my parents to pay so much for my undergraduate school and then med school, that is all. I think, ( I might be wrong ) that if I were to go to India, I would save my parents some money. Plus, the med school in India which I would go ( IF I were to go ) would be a school recognized by the US and that the USMLE exams are incorporated in the curriculum. That is why

Also, if you're a really competitive high school student, you shouldn't have trouble getting a scholarship that will cover most (if not all) of your college education. I started undergrad for the second time a few years ago, so that wasn't an option for me. I went to community college, earned a 4.0, and got into a few Ivies and a state school honors program that covers my tuition and most of my living expenses. Many private schools offer huge scholarships to National Merit Scholars. My sister started late, got a small scholarship freshman year, then earned above a 3.8 and got so many scholarships that she didn't pay a dime for the rest of undergrad.

Plus, all the Ivies offer full tuition now to undergraduate students (only those coming straight from high school) whose parents make under a certain income. It varies depending on the school, but at Harvard the deal is that under $60,000 is free. Between $60 and 120,000, it's 10% of your parents' gross income. Over $120,000, there's still some leeway, and over $180,000, you're on your own. Columbia, UPenn, and Cornell offer similar financial arrangements.

If you're a top student AND are disadvantaged, there are tons of opportunities that will probably cost less than airfare back to the States to visit. Check them out.

I appreciate that, but in my case I am an International student and I am not sure whether I can get into these ives. I have a good ACT score and SAT score but an average GPA as I did not do well in the first semester of my senior year ( Long Story )
So I might or might not get into those Ivies, though I do not want to keep my hopes high. On top of that, it is harder as an international student getting into college, as it is more competitive, in the sense that I would have to compete for lesser spots amongst a larger pool. So, that is why.

Hi, I am a high school student who is contemplating about going to India to study for medicine. I will definitely come back every summer and do attachments at various hospitals at the US. I know that I would get an incredibly high USMLE score. what I am just worried about is whether I can get into the residency of my choice. For Instance I would like to get into neurosurgery residency. Please someone, provide me with stats, personal experiences or good advice, as I have to make a decision fast. Thank you and have a nice day.

What now??

Hey, stop sending me profanity-laced private messages. If you have something to say, just post it here for everyone to see.

Hey big jerk, you do not have the right to say "no" I am not going to be a neurosurgeon without knowing a damn **** about me. Get a life you loser. Stop finding pleasure in other people's plans when you yourself do not plan for your own life. F*** off.😡
To address your concern, I most certainly did plan for myself.

LOL, he sent you PMs with expletives too? I thought I was the only one!

be nice you guys. I'd be lying if I said that when I realized I want to be a surgeon, my mind didn't jump to Neuro. Then I did an internship with Trauma and that was mind blowing...thats all it took me to realize that there are lots of tasty specialties out there...I don't have to pick just yet.

Ok, "no exceptions" was too harsh. Maybe more like "some exceptions." 😉 I thought plastics at first because of all the plastic surgery shows I watched, but I realized cutting near the face and eyes weirds me out too much.

This, and I don't understand why HS students put "pre-medical."

I was bothered by this too until I found out that there is no status for High School students. There is only pre-health, but if they currently know that they want to do medicine then pre-medical fits them best. It doesn't mean they are in college or think that they are.
