My initial response to your question is "possible, but improbable." While research and pubs are not required to get into med school, if you're going to ostensibly pursue a career as a physician scientist and you want to start your career at a pre-eminent research powerhouse, you need to be highly qualified for both the MD and the PhD. I have two questions:
1) If you focus on leadership/service, then why do you want a PhD?
2) How do you define "productivity in research" if not by pubs?
