I graduated last December (2010) with a degree in Biology Education and a minor in Broadfield Science. I originally planned on teaching and I am certified but I don't think that is the route I want to go now. So I have been looking at different graduate programs (exercise phys, nutrition, Physical therapy). I would really prefer PT. I am looking for some advice on whether I could get into a PT program. I know most say minimun 3.0 gpa ect... I am looking for info from you, students and current PT's on whether I would have a shot at getting into a program. I have all pre-req's except Sociology.

General Bio B+
Chem 1 B
Chem 2 C
Physics 1 B-
Physics 2 B
Psychology B
Anatomy 1 B
Anatomy 2 C+

I have a lot science credits in many science areas: Geography, Geology, Microbiology..ect I don't have any Kins classes expect for a 2 credit Wellness class.

My overall GPA is 3.09
I have worked in a hospital as a security officer part time for 3 years during school. I have 3 vartisy letters in college wrestling. I would plan on doing some volunteer/observation work along with my GRE before looking at applying.

So after all that, what do you people think? Do I have a chance, "Like one in a million" What are your realistic thoughts about me applying to a PT program.

I really want to commit to this but before I start observations and GRE prep I want to have an idea on where I stand for admission. I live in Wisconsin.

Have you taken physiology too?

If I were you, I'd start researching which programs you might be interested in attending. Each school has its own prereqs and GRE requirements (some don't even require the GRE, but most do). I'm assuming you plan on applying in next year's cycle if you are still planning on getting to the GRE and observation hours over time.

If you find you're interested in PT (observation hours really helped confirm it for me, a non-traditional student!), I say go for it. Just keep informed on what courses you need (I don't need sociology, for instance, although I did take it) for each program you're interested in. Most of the prereqs will overlap though thankfully.

If you'd like to raise your GPA more, perhaps try to retake the classes you had the lowest grades in. If you raise the GPA from now until you apply along with obtain a good GRE score, you should have pretty good odds of getting in somewhere. It also helps if you're willing to attend many different schools to spread your risk out in case one or two schools reject you.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do. I was a business economics undergrad, so don't whatever your background is give you any doubts.

Since I am not on the adcom, and no one on this board is...I will give you my advice.

Your overall could use some work and your prerequisite GPA is a little low too. Do very well on the GRE and kill everything else in your application. It really depends on the schools you're applying, so research research research before throwing away your money applying to 80 schools( keep in mind the guy that did that didn't get in anywhere lol, poor chap).

I say you have a shot if you're willing to put the work in. Good luck bro!

Awesome guys I really appreciate the responses. I have a family friend who is a manager at an outpatient facility. I am going to schedule some observation hours with him and hopefully that will solidify my commitment towards gaining acceptance into a school.

I will also start doing more research. I would like to get into a state school (Wisconsin) for financial reason but I will keep options open. We also have reciprocity with Minnesota so that opens a few more doors

One thing, I have found state schools to be more competitive than private due to the lower tuition. At least, that's how it is in Florida.

This might be helpful to you too. It's data from last year's application cycle.

http://www.apta.org/uploadedFiles/A...APTA/PTCAS/PTCAS_ApplicantDataReport_0910.pdf

Percentage of people who received an offer from at least one school, categorized by the total number of schools to which they applied:

1 school applied: 41.3%
2 schools applied: 45.0%
3 schools applied: 51.0%
4 schools applied: 57.8%
5 schools applied: 59.1%
6 schools applied: 57.7%
7 schools applied: 61.1%
8 schools applied: 63.1%
9 schools applied: 60.0%
10 schools applied: 63.0%
