Can I just say screw it to my @#$!% undergraduate major and JUST do the pre-med course requirements? Is there a medical school somewhere -- ANYWHERE in the US that will take me if I ace all my pre-med reqs and the MCAT, even if I don't major in anything? I hate how I'm going to have to wait to apply, and I'm a non-traditional student so I have this "the clock is ticking" problem....AAAAAARRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Actually, there used to be a few med schools that would allow you to matriculate without having a degree - I'm not sure if they still allow this or which schools they were, but you may want to look into this.

I will say, however, that even if there are a handful of schools that do this, it is highly advisable to finish your degree. You would only be able to apply to these select schools and if you didn't get in, you would be somewhat screwed.

Mr Furious, I don't know if you're still in school, but here's what I did. I took 2 years and 1 summer school seesion to finish my premed reuiqrements. For the last two years of college I decided to double major in a non-science area and was still able to apply to med school with no science major. So maybe you could do the reverse...finish whatever major you have begun and take the premed req.s after.

I felt the same way you do 2 years ago. I am an older student who returned to school to get a B. S. in Biology. I met a number of times with the local med school and we talked about this very subject. Here is what the director of admissions told me when I asked her if I could apply without my degree....

"You can apply with 90 credits and the pre-med requirements, HOWEVER, the comittee frowns on any applicant that does that. They look upon that applicant as irrogant, and feel no one is qualified enough to start school without a degree. 4 years of school is a way to prepare yourself for the rigors of med school education. So in a nutshell, I would STRONGLY urge you not to apply until your senior year so that you will have a 4 year degree when you start med school."

I'm no fool, I listened to her and waited until this year to apply. Heed our advice, bite the bullet and get your degree. Live through all those boring requirments and be proud when you earn your degree. 😀

Fortunately they also happen to fulfill my "basic requirements" for graduation.

Two years to go before I can even take the *!$#@! MCAT and I'm older than most people here. The clock is ticking and I'll be old before I can practice. Oh well, at least I'll be ready to practice just in time for retirement. 😀

Somedays it just seems like time is passing me by too quickly, but that's just my fault and nobody else's. I should've acted on my dream of being a doctor decades ago instead of putting it off thinking "it takes forever to get there". Now it still takes forever, except I'm still on square one.

Now, can I get some cheese with my whine? 😀

think of it this way: if you don't get into medical school or decide that it isn't for you....then atleast you have a degree to fall back on. or just do a short major and the pre med stuff.

Well guess what?? You can become a Doctor at 36(whatever) or you can just become 36, either way you are aging everyday you wait. As far as I know noone can stop the clock.
