Can I list a volunteer activity that I quit early?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

So I was a volunteer for a while but the relationship with the volunteer coordinator sorted of ended on a sour note. i committed to volunteer a whole year but as the year progressed I couldn't keep coming for various reasons. So anyway I couldn't really do anything about it so I stopped coming and I think the coordinator dislikes me a lot because of this (there weren't that many volunteers). Can I still list this as an activity or should I worry that somehow this story that I quit is going to get out? I also do not know exactly how many hours I had because my hours were counted by signing a paper.

well sure you can list it, but it'd prob be best if you could find out from someone how many hours you had. but you can list it.

I mean you can just estimate how many hours you have. But you kind of screwed yourself over. Why'd you volunteer to do it for a year and then kind of flake out? It's no problem unless the med school calls the office. But in that case, not only will your hours probably not match up exactly, but if this person has a vendetta against you it might come out.

Was there someone other than the volunteer coordinator that you worked under (like a doctor / head nurse) that you could list as a contact instead? Someone who knows you obviously but someone other than the mean volunteer lady.

Unless you really need the EC, I'd probably just drop it. The chances the med school calls to verify the volunteering are incredibly low, but if they did and talked with that supervisor, you'd probably be boned. Just not worth it if you're already well-endowed with ECs.

I can easily estimate the number of hours but I'm more worried about the coordinator saying something bad about me...

So you have to list a contact for every activity? This is not good haha

Med schools are exceedingly unlikely to call. With 10,000 applications and 15 activities on each, that would be 150,000 phone calls to make.

I tend to disagree with other posters. I would list the activity if it is important, but only list actual volunteer dates (not those you promised). As long as you are honest, it is fine.

Also, if you have other hospital volunteering, you can combine them under one AMCAS activity so that there seems to be more continuity.

If I remember correctly, the AMCAS has fields for supervisor and contact for each activity. But some activities I listed were independent or honors and such, so I left some fields blank. It would seem odd, though, to list hospital volunteering with no contact.

YEah, i realize the probabilty of them calling is really low but I'm just paranoid. I think that grouping everything under one as you suggest may be good? I'm not sure how that would work though.. if they were all different types of hospitals?
