transfer student from cc-spent 3 years
transfer gpa 2.1

now to uni
1st semester-fall 2010
physics, calc III, anatomy, religion
semester gpa: 2.30

spring 2011
chem2, physics2, cellbased bio, 2 labs in association
semster gpa: 2.65 (1C, 2A, 2Bs)

summer 2011
upperdivision bio-plants/envioronment
semester gpa: 4.00 (A-and it wasnt an easy one either)

fall 2011
planned: ochem/Lab, genetics/Lab, microbio/Lab, genes/developm

spring 2012 (graduating!)
planned: ochem2/Lab, physio, molecularbio, senior capstone, research

as you can see, i have a slow and upward trend going on-i am also very involved at my school and actively engaging in wellness programs and a president of the dental program which i opened

i have great ECs and lots of shadowing/internship hours under my belt

im hoping to finish with mostly As my last 2 semesters but even then my overall gpa will be brought upto like a 3.1 🙁
but my science gpa should be strong-hopefully 3.6-3.7 range

most of my Cs came from history and general classes at my cc (was just a lazy student overall-no excuses)

so my question to you is: i plan on taking a gap year-BUT should i use that year to take upper division classes at another uni (like UCLA or CSUN) to beef up my gpa, or take a job as the pathologists lab assist. at the dental clinic at ucla...(where i intern) to show my clinical experience?

i know the adcom looks at your undergrad gpa but i hope that they will see that my sci gpa is strong (and will be this fall) and i have good ec's

but if i need to take more non-sci classes (since thats where my gpa isnt so great) i will do so in order to be more competitive

or what about a post bacc program? im open to that but i really dont want to take more loans out for another degree in hopes of it helpin my app if i can go the cheaper route and also just take more courses to rectify my grades

what do you think?

all advice appreciated!!

I know the upward trend will help you out. A solid DAT score will serve you greatly. Definitely look into SMP(Special Master's Program) or a Post-Bacc,(formal or informal) to give you an even better chance to show adcoms what you can do.

For more info check out SDN's Post-Bacc forum

should i consider even sending in my app the next cycle if my overall gpa is 3.1 and science is 3.7?
and i live in cali and want to apply to all state schools including UoP and a few east coast schools out there (BU. NYU, etc)

would it be enough for me to continue taking upper division courses to boost my gpa and continue my job at the ucla dental clinic during my gap year versus just getting a masters? im looking for 1 year programs and wouldnt i need a competitive gpa to apply to those programs?
