hey I am extremely new to this.. hopefully you guys can help me =\

im starting my third year in college and i really want to do dentistry. my ambition is as high as ever, been getting good grades, internship, extracurriculars... etc etc. however, my last two years were horrible. EXTREMELY bad grades! its so bad that i have to consider a backup plan. i was wondering what steps should i take if i were to get rejected? programs? im so new to this! please help!!

It would be nice to know how bad... like give us some numbers... We cant really tell you anything by hearing something so vague as... "I did really bad".

Have you taken the DAT yet?

Do you know WHY you want to be a dentist, or was it just a spur of the moment type of thing?

I suggest you finish your last two years of undergrad strong, followed by a Master's or some other post-bacc program. Focus solely on your grades; don't worry about extracurriculars. Oh, and destroy the DAT.

1. Study very very hard for the rest of your college years to bring up the GPA as high as possible.

2. Study very very very hard for DAT and score 20+.

3. Start shadowing/assisting at dental clinic.

At the end of year, if you have 3.0GPA/20+DAT, you should be fine.

If your GPA is still below 2.8, try postbac program to bring it up.

Don't lose any hope yet. You can do it!

Please don't lose hope just yet. I applied this cycle, but my horrible DAT scores (15ish) are holding back my high GPA (3.7ish). The key to getting back into the game is to have a plan and follow it. For instance, right now I feel brain dead from DAT studying, so I am focusing on finishing physics, and then I will revist the DAT and raise my scores. If it means reapplying next cycle, and the cycle after that, then so be it.

Whatever you do, DO NOT RUSH, and DO NOT BE QUICK TO JUMP SHIP! By "jump ship," I mean do not be quick to run and enter another field until you have exhausted all of your options. Having a backup is fine, but be sure to focus on your goal. Take your time... if this is what you want, you WILL find a way. Just remember: you can only take the DAT 3 times.
