Hi everyone...

Does anyone have any clue as to what the statistics are for transfering to a medical school in Virginia? I just got married about 2 months ago and would like to try to move to at least the same state as my spouse...
Here's the situation:
His job is in Virginia and I'm in Ohio... I'm wondering if any of the schools in VA would even consider transfer applicants.
Do you have to be a stellar student to be considered for transferring? Also, would they take you if you're willing to repeat a year for the sake of being close to your spouse?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

🙂

Which of the 3 schools in Virginia are you interested in? I don't know too much about the stats for transfer applicant but I think you have to be within the first 2 years of med school to transfer provided that the school has an open spot. If your hubby got a high tech job in Northern VA (that's where most of the jobs are nowaday) then schools in DC such as
Howard, G.W. or Georgetown might be better alternatives in terms of location because each of the 3 schools in Virginia are at least 2 hrs drive from Northern VA and Wash DC.
Hope this helps.
K.T.

You can transfer to a school if your spouse/partner work in the MEDICAL SCHOOL. Some schools even state that s/he has to a faculty member or student in the medical school.

Almost, have you called the schools to ask them about their policies?

Most schools will allow you to transfer if you have a good reason. If your wife got transferred to Virginia and you want to be with her (like you're in school in California right now or something), then they will probably consider that a reason for transfer.

Call and ask, and if there are positions open, go ahead and apply. The worst they can say is no.

Keep in mind that transfer positions are very limited (the number of open positions being equal to the number of people who have failed or dropped out of the class you are transferring into). Also you should know that almost every school limits transfer students to coming into the third year. In other words, if you're a third year now, you can't transfer. If you are a first year student, you must wait until your second year before you apply so you can start at the new school your third year.
