Can someone enlighten me and tell me what is the difference between medical research done by MDs and biological engineering research....?

In the medical field?
Most Biomedical Engineers I've encountered are PhDs only. I suppose there are some who are MD/PhDs, but that seems to be a rare path.

That being said, they both need each other immensely. The BME PhDs need MDs to give them clinical relevant ideas and the MDs need the BME PhDs to actually design the device and the analytical algorithms. Otherwise, the BME PhDs are developing foreskin impedance analytical devices and the MDs are applying it to the forehead.
