Hey everyone. I'm just a little confused about the licensing exams required for dentistry. I understand that there are 2 examinations (one after year 2, and one after year 4). But if someone could elaborate on how these specific exams differ based on where you want to practice. What do students do if they are unsure where exactly they want to practice? Are there also examinations per state or region? I'm just very confused on this whole topic honestly. Any advice would be great (in case someone wants to, for example, get married during dental school and is unsure about where they plan to settle down after school).

The nbde steps 1 and 2, which will soon be combined into one exam, have no effect on where you can practice. Every single person has to take them and pass before they can do any kind of dentistry. After that, you have to take whatever state licensure exam it is that lets you practice where you want to. The NERB, for example.

how do you know they are being combined?

What are the various licensing exams other than the NERB and where do they apply for? I can't seem to locate this information, probably because I don't really know what to search for. If anyone could direct me over to a link that explains this all, that'd be great!

If specializing these exams still must be passed even if you don't plan to practice general dentistry after graduating from dental school correct?

yes... foreign trained dentists who want to specialize for example and practice in the USA, have to pass too.

you will learn all this in dschool

i would worry more about getting good grades before thinking about board/license exams.

It's nice to have an understanding of what becoming licensed entails.

Everyone takes NBDE I and II. Then after that, it depends on where you want to work. WREBs for west coast, NERBs for East coast, etc etc. Some states, Nevada and Hawaii, require their very own state boards. Some states, like NY, will grant you licensure without having to take an exam if you do a GPR. You need to visit the dental board for the individual state in question to know what they require.

Why would they feel the need to combine the boards? So would people who take that have to remember all of their basic sciences for four years?
