Be- has 2 electrons in its valence shell
H- each have 1 e- in their valence shell
To make a lewis structure, you first add both of these up. So, there is a total of 4 e-. Now make your Lewis structure. The only structure you can make is H-Be-H. There is a total of 4 e- in this lewis structure and therefore, this molecule is linear. All you do to get hybridization is count the number of e- domains around the molecule and compare it to (s p p p). For example, in the molecule above, Be has two e-domains around it. So you take an "s" and one "p" to get sp hybridized. Another example CH2=CH2. Each carbon here has 3 e- domains around it. Therefore each carbon is sp2 hybridized.
