read feralis notes, where it says "When the zona pellucida of one animal species is injected into the bloodstream of another, it results in sterility of the second species due to immune response ".

What does this mean? why does injecting zona pellucida result in sterility? I'm just confused about the mechanism 🙂

I didn't see this part in Feralis yet, but I would assume that it is because the fertilization membrane of humans (zona pellucida) has fast rxn to depolarize the membrane to stop sperm from coming in (fast block) and a slow block in which cortical granules form after the depolarization which further prevents sperm from coming in. Usually this occurs after a sperm enters due to the acrosomal reaction, but if you are just injecting it then I guess it doesn't need sperm entry and just forms the zona pellucida on its own. Maybe you should tag feralis in here and ask or something, but this is the way I would answer that question. However, I am not 100% sure where the immune system comes into play.

"Note: The zona pellucida is commonly used to control wildlife population problems by immunocontraception. When the zona pellucida of one animal species is injected into the bloodstream of another, it results in sterility of the second species due to immune response – fertilization can’t occur because antibodies have already bound the zona pellucida, preventing sperm from binding"

^thats the answer actually. SO I guess it doesn't form a zona pellucida from the injected one, it has a bunch of antibodies acting as a shield or something.

Zona Pellucida contains glycoproteins. When injected into the bloodstream of another animal, it causes an immune reaction, whereas the recipient produces antibody against ZP proteins. Once that occurs, ZP cannot bind to the sperm and guide it towards the egg, which is a necessary process for fertilization to occur. This will result in infertility.
This mechanism is called immunocontraception. It may cause permanent or temporary infertility.

Hope this helps.
