Is it just a short duration at another clinic? Is the clinic private or public? Is what you can do pretty broad? A lot of actual clinical work or shadowing? Is it like a mentorship with the main dentists? Do people go to see if that specialty is a right fit?

You might want to try asking this in the dental students section, since the people there may know more about it. I'm interested in knowing more about externships as well, but there's no hurry since most people do them towards the end of DS.
