Hi all,

I asked a prof to write a letter of rec. and he said he could. However, he wanted me to write the first draft! What does this mean? How do I write a draft evaluating myself? I'm confused. Anyone ever encountered such a case?

Thanks!

I didn't have exactly that case, but you have to remember that these are really busy people. Make this simple for the person. Most profs requested a CV, and asked me what points I would like them to focus on in their letters.

Write a postive draft detailing some of the great things about you that the prof doesn't know, and include a CV with it. The prof will edit as they see fit.

Good Luck.

My dean asked me to write an advertisement for myself - which I understand as a request that I write my own recommendation. Take advantage of this - he'll revise it to add the personal touch that the letter needs to sound right. Just make sure the wording isn't too similar to what you write in your essays.
