Do the schools hate when ppl postpone interviews ? are there any disadvantages to postponing an interview ?

I am asking b/c I might go out of the country for a couple of weeks for some volunteer work.

It gives schools the impression that you've more important things to do with your time then interview with them. If I were on a committee I'd think you were interviewing at another school.

but during the interview, cant I explain the situation ? I think volunteering is a good excuse

Pretty much all schools either let you choose your interview date. As long as you plan ahead your volunteering, you're fine.

Worry about getting interviews first.

This volunteer opportunity is in another country and for 2 weeks only. This is my only chance to do this.

Even if there are available dates and it's not a problem with the school, I still think it's a significant disadvantage to take a later date. The schools accept on rolling admissions and the more you postpone it, the more competitive it's going to get for the remaining spots.

With that said, If you were a highly competitive applicant expecting multiple interviews and the one you're postponing is not at your top choice school, it's probably not going matter much. If the interview you're thinking of postponing is one of your only shot of getting in this year, I would never risk it. Good luck.

According to the director of admissions at UCONN, most schools rank the students they interview based on their interview and overall application, and that's how they give out acceptances for Dec 1. The actually interview portion is not weighted more in September than in November. Besides, people reschedule all the time. I rescheduled multiple interviews for different reasons; everyone I spoke to was very understanding and reassured me that it wouldn't affect me.

If by rolling admissions you mean pre- Dec 1 vs post, I agree it would be unwise to reschedule for a January interview.

- and im in a similar situation - I am planning on going on a volunteering trip in mid october, but ASDOH invited me on oct 2- I was considering delaying my interview until after my mission trip - so that I can have something to talk about during the interivew, instead of sayin - oh, im going in two weeks

Yeah. According to doc toothachestats, all pre dec interviewees have the same likelihood of acceptance except at baylor.

i hope you're gonna volunteer with ethical doc's. recently ADA.ADEA made a statement about being cautious. why do u have to travel out of country? how much is the travel cost? u should use that money for interview flight's. I'm sure once u get in you have more volunteering opportunities as a dental student. rethink your decisions. its your future just saying

Each school will have their own policy, just contact them and ask.
Most are flexible although some aren't.
