SDNers, long time listener first time caller here. For you experienced applicants, can you apply to too many schools? I am an older applicant with a weak GPA, 3.0, but from the Naval Academy with an engineering degree. I am ready to send in my AADSAS app. but can't decide on how many schools. Do Admission Committees look unfavorably on applying to a bunch of schools, say 13-14? I'm taking the DAT in a few weeks, practice tests indicate I should be able to get around 20 on the various sections.

Thanks for any help.

Feel free to do so if you have money.

As someone that applied to 13 or so schools myself I don't think adcoms will hold it against you. The better question is will your wallet forgive you for applying to so many schools?

Your 3.0 is in eng from the naval acd...this is not a week GPA. Score a 20 on the DAT and apply to 10 to 15 schools and you WILL get accepted.

i applied to 11 i think, 9 completed. didn't seem to hurt me, but i did notice that hurt the budget, and it was a hassle trying to track of a couple of the schools ~~ Pittsburgh, and umm not sure what other one it was.

Thanks for the answers, I think I may "cut" the list down to 11 or 12, but I definately want to get in somewhere and get started since I'm not getting any younger.

Honestly applying to 13-14 vs. 11-12 is not that different, especially w/your GPA. Just for the peace of mind apply to 13-14. The diff. in $ between applying from 11 to 14 is only 3 schools * $60... (not sure if the price is right). Just think about it, I don't think it's worth the peace of mind. Also, since you don't know your DAT scores, it's hard to judge. My strategy was that if I bombed the DAT I would then apply to more schools. You can do the same thing, although it seems you won't bomb the test, but you never know. I'm also an older student, so this same issue crossed my mind last year. Good luck!!!!

After you take the DAT you will have a better idea of how many schools to apply to. If you score a 22, 14 schools is overkill assuming all other aspects of your application are good.

In you first post, you asked if ADCOMs looks less favorably upon applicants who apply to many schools. The quick answer to that question is "no" because the schools don't know where you have applied unless you share this information with them. It is rumored that some behind-the-scenes chatter goes on with ADCOMs from different schools, but . . .

jeez...i applied to 29 schools...just hoping to get in somewhere do the adcoms see every school that you apply to???
i need to get in somewhere because i don't want to have to take a year off....i looked at the dental stats webpage and am applying to everything i think i have a chance of gettin in....and now that the aadsas is already submitted im a little concerned

UNC asks on the supplementary application where else you are applying, so some ADCOMS will know through their supp. apps.

Although you don't have to answer that. You also don't have to answer questions about whether or not you are married, what religion you are, whether or not you have kids, etc.

don't be afraid to mention how many schools you apply to, especially during interviews:
schools like to know that they could lose you and your $$ to a competitor 😉

Apply to them all if you are really worried. Honestly, an extra grand to apply to a ton of schools is a drop in the bucket compared to the debt you will likely incur. Also, if you apply to very few schools and don't get accepted you will have to wait another year. That's one year of potential income lost because you didn't fork out the money.

I just e-submitted my app, ended up applying to 12: UNC, AZ, CWR, CRE, LLU, NYU, NSU, TEMP, TUF, FLA, MYD, and VCU. I guess I can add some more if I like after I get my DAT scores in a few weeks. Thanks for the advice.

agreed...thats exactly what my dad said....i was a little apprehensive about applying to so many schools but in the end if i get in somewhere its all worth it.
thanks alot guys
