If you cannot draw? I.e. something as simple as a house and people already will tell you "you suck" while something a bit more involved like "shark" and it's completely embarassing. Also I can't dance. And not like people who say they cant dance but I would be completely stiff unless I am falling over drunk.

no you cannot be a dentist...dentistry requires you draw st.peter's square in great detail...you must also be able to break dance in front of your patients and perform dental operations AT THE SAME TIME..solution: quit dentistry and become a trash collector :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

You definitively can't be a dentist. These two tasks are some of the most important things a dentist does everyday.... Drill a tooth, make a sketch...do a dance.

Haha!

In all seriousness I don't think your drawing abilities or lack thereof can say much about how you would perform as a dentist. Some people are gifted at drawing and others are not. The question is, have you had formal lessons in drawing techniques and still can't draw? If so, that might be more telling...

No hand-eye coordination = no dentist

If you can't draw a straight line, you certainly can't drill someone's tooth with any form of precision

Unless you can't draw because of a physical disability with your hands and arms, of course you could be considered an excellent candidate for the dentistry profession. 🙂

Not necessarily...there are techniques that can be taught to help people draw. Some people intuitively know these, others must be shown. I think the same could be said with skills in dentistry. No body goes into dental school with the skills they need to succeed. It must be taught. But, like I said earlier, you must be teachable. If after someone has been taught to draw (or drill or sculpt, etc) and can't do it, that is another story.

so what must you be able to learn? I can draw a circle or a line or any other basic shape. I mean I cannot draw anything more complicated. I also think I would be able to make those cavities, but I am concerned about things like adjusting dentures or making crowns that are right for a specific person's mouth. If I were to take an architecture class I would probably get an F. BTW, I would not want to be an average dentist.

OMG THIS POST IS SO AWESOME!! HAHAHAHAHHAHHAA!!!!

I'm sorry I understand your concern but seriously!? MWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! It's really cute!!

Anyway, here is my answer:

Manual Dexterity is a skill that can be learned. Not being able to draw is not an issue of manual dexterity but rather your brain not being able to translate what you see into a two dimensional form. If you are concerned with your manual dexterity skills I would suggest you take a ceramics class because that is a discipline which directly refines skills that are similar to the ones utilized by a dentist. KNITTING is also a great exercise.

Being a stiff dancer just means you are too shy to shake your ass which you should seriously get over if you want to get chicks.

So don't sweat it.

ps. You are 100% in control of what kind of dentist you will be. If you are smart enough to get good grades and DAT scores than you are most likely intelligent enough to pick up the manual dexterity skills, so don't worry about that part until you get to dental school.

I was going to say you'd be fine as a dentist not being able to draw. But then I saw that you can't dance... Game over.

The best dentist in town are also the best at krumping. You'll be a dentist but not the best.

get a friend

get a little mirror

and play in their mouth

if you can't toy around in there like you intended to then you can't be a dentist

my perceptual skills do not let me see and do things upside down and backwards, plus I'm not handsy so yeah dentistry was never on my list of possible careers

fwiw, i can't draw to save my life either

But don't you then need a friend who has dentures or something? What could you possibly do with your bare hands? So does it mean that if you go to med school you will be pushing for fields like internal medicine, em, anesthesiology? how about knitting and assembling furniture from ikea? do you suck at that too? No one ever told me that I sucked at those tasks but then I think it requires much less skills than fooling with someone's mouth. I don't think I have perceptual skills either.

Without stabbing gums and cutting tongues I couldn't lol. You've got to remember your little pointy objects are going to be guided by what you're seeing as a reflection when you're looking at it slumped over and upside down in a sense. I'm not turned on by surgery, no. I'll push for FM or EM. Sure there are some procedures, but at least you're looking at them straight on for the most part.

so funny... next time i go to the dentist im gonna ask her if she can draw.

during one of my interviews, i was provided with canvas and some paint and told to re-create the mona lisa while performing an impromptu dance routine to michael jackson's thriller.

totally agree !!
especially it is good for those who are working on their application and "freakin' out" <wink>

Okay I'll be the first to ask...

wtf does drawing have to do with dental procedures?

There is this thing called perceptual ability test on the DAT... this is the test dental schools use to see if you have 3-D mental mapping ability, and this test, has NOTHING to do with drawing....

Sweet, I can break dance and draw!! I'm a shoo-in for DS!!!

I play DDR Max or Stepmania game for my hand eye coordination lol :laugh:also dance isnt acurate but i play same game on pad too :laugh:

:laugh: You need to teach me!

...

BTW, you can play video games all day and your manual dexterity will get better! 😉 This thread is hilarious!

I must make an update:
I believe I can apply and get accepted for dental school in australia (4yr program). Australia accepts mcat and does not require essays, etc. I also think I have a good chance of getting into med school in usa this cycle. From doing more research I feel that I really want to become either an anesthesiologist or a dental anesthesiologist slash general dentist. But I feel I would make a better m.d. anesthesiologist than a general dentist.

I learned recently that in usa/canada dentists can do a residency in dental anesthesia which is shorter in length than m.d. anesthesia. You are also restricted to dental anesthesia. But this residency is not very competitive, it is shorter, and I think it actually allows more job flexibility. Like if I did that residency I could work anywhere in australia, canada, usa and I would not even need a patient base, just go around dental offices and do my thing. Which would be the best lifestyle. But if I were stuck as a general dentist I am afraid I might be forced to do cosmetic work and I would fail.
