I'm in CAP fellowship, but for personal reasons, not due to anything in the program, I may need to drop out after one year. I fast tracked, did a full year of adult outpatient training. Can I drop out and still be an adult psychiatrist?

It is possible, it can depend on the reason. I almost did at one point due to a financial crisis. Why do you want to, though? You should talk to your program director. They will likely work very hard to help you finish fellowship unless you are really hard to work with.

I can't give details. Just wanted to know if it were possible.

If you completed all adult requirements by the end of a PGY-III year in an adult program, you should be able to become board eligible by the end of this June (the end of a PGY-IV year for you). You really need to jump with the ABPN if you haven't already applied to take boards this coming Sept. You will want your current PD to summarize this year's training and send it to the ABPN and get this in writing.

Yes. I have two friends who did one year of child rotation who decided that it was not for them so they just graduated/dropped out early. 3+1 is still 4 which is the reqs for a general psychiatrist!

Yes, I did it and went back to complete my last year after serving two years as an adult psychiatrist.

You shouldn't leave training unless you have a very good reason. Taking the pay cut is not fun.

Don't close the door on it even if you decide to leave after 1 year of training as ACGME gives 5 years to go back and complete it.

In some ways it makes you a better psychiatrist because you polish your adult skills, making you better able to deal with parents. That being said, it is better to complete it in one shot.

Is there something special you had to do when you decided to drop out after one year?

Absolutely possible, make sure have a good reason ie: family/moving etc..
