I'm new, so I should first talk to the closest to get close to the farthest.

I've just finished my 2nd year, getting ready to face the 3rd.
University of Jordan is very good in comparison to others in Arab World.

i'm a 2nd year, im starting 3rd year next semester, what about you?

Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) nice! i wonder if i know u!!
PS sara is just a nick!
Sooo how's the hoilday goin?

It seems like medicine became part of my life, ok not just a part, a big part, so I can't be in holiday without sth reminds me that I got stuck in this big hole called "medicine"! So, you see that my holiday has gone with the wind looking in forums of medicine about how other students of medicine spend their holidays.
;) I think you've got stuck in the hole, too.

yes you bet i did!

is it just me or these ppl here know a lot about everything?!
i feel so stupid and confused as i still haven't decided which field i'm going to specialize in..
and to be honest this is the first time i try to search for a website about medicine, but i'm glad i found it, i mean it's just been 1 day and i feel it did open my eyes to lots of things, i'm asking abt stuff now!!

do u know if our average in the uni affects our choice of the field we wanna specialize in? or is it just the score we get in the test?

This is a forum of medical students and you will find many kinds of people here:
  • people just wanna ask (do not know anything)
  • people just wanna answer (think they know everything)
  • people just wanna lok around (put a post here and there with no meaning)
Ok they all belong to either:
  • people who still in high school
  • people who are suffering from medicine now (like me and you)
  • people who has just finished school of medicine and looking for residency
  • people who are in residency
  • people who are specialists
  • and even people who has no link to medicine at all
so you ca find that we belong to an earlier stage of people, who need other to tell them about what to do.
Don't think so much of your speciality at the moment, just think how to finish the next year.
Speciality can't be thought about unless you experience it yourself, i.e. at 4th through 6th years.
hope your confusion gets reduced.

yes that's what ppl i know have been telling me, they say i should start thinking of the speciality maybe on my fourth year, so i guess i really should start worrying abt how to finish my third year!

heard it takes more hardwork than 2nd year.. :scared: God help us!

P.S i just found another website just like this one if you're interested

i still don't know if it's as good as this one, anyway here it is:

http://www.valuemd.com/

I know this site, I used to get in it without registration in the past. Anyway thank you very much.

Well, IgR, still new yet able to categorise and judge ppl here, pretty interesting :)

Well, Sara, regarding your average, score or whatever...the answer depends on the place you're talking about. In USA, ur grades carry no weight, ur USMLE score(dunno if u're familiar with that) is really what counts. If you're thinking about specialising in local hospitals, your grades will count.

Consernig the field to choose, whether to worry about it now or not, this really a very debatable yet challenging subject. Actually, It depends on many factors like is it a competitive field? local hospital or abroad( europe or USA). May ppl are born with the obsession of being a surgeon! and many of them think about surgery in USA. So such a studet need to work on it as early as possible.

It's very true that you haven't experienced many aspects of medicine like Orthopaedics, eurosurgery, anasthesia,..etc, and when you might find oe of them the one you really like and u wat it as u're speciality. This is propably in 5th of 6th year.

Bottom line, when you figure out what u wanna be just work on it hard although I recommend you start general things(volunteer..etc) as early as possible. If you're thinking about specialisig in Jordan, just take a nap till u get ur degree and then apply for a residency in any local hospital!

I dunno if you're the kind of ppl who accept comments and advices without hard feelings, but anyway I recommend that you don't waste much time surfing the web for medical stuff cos it's gonna ruine your brain! believe me, I've been through that. Even this forum, don't read much about things you don't even recognise because many don't fit our system as they are designed to the american system.

did i write too much?!

We all konw that most of this forum's students take another system of studying, but I think it's not wrong to know other systems.
In addition, they talk about many subjects that we can use them, converting them to our system (and that's so easy) and take benifit from them.

One last thing, didn't you admit that you are a medical student at JUST, what do you actually do here?

Well, I don't disagree with what you said and it neither opposes what I said earlier nor cotradict my presence in this forum. I used the expression "waste much time".

Just for the record, that piece you quoted conserns Sara as she( or maybe he) seemed confused and new to many things.

thanks a lot rox! tht ws very helpful :)
actually i still dunno which country i'm going to specialize in.. but i guess as u said it can be so helpful if i start doing things like volunteering, donating.. these things can help no matter what country i'm gong to

i was wondering if u know about specializing in a europian country like france, i heard some specialities take a shorter time to finish, is it true? and do u know what is the exam one has to make in order to get accepted there? is there any chance getting accepted there might be easier than in the U.S?!

as i'm new to the whole thing, i think i could use any kind of advice with no hard feelings at all! i do agree that stuff here can be so confusing as most ppl here talk abt different systems.. but i think if u talk to the right ppl, and choose the right topics then u can for sure get some benefit, as i'm doing now!

Anyway, thanks a lot for the help

P.S i'm a she! :D
i was confused thts right, but i think my confusion is disappearing now thanks to u guys!

It's very nice to find 3 (including me) Jordanian students at this forum.

But I wonder why we don't have our own forum, there would be more members, and this will satisfy Rox by talking about our systems in Jordan, ok it won't be so good like this forum but it will be enough for us!

I noticed that Syria, Egypt, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, ... have their own forums for medical students.
It would be nice if we have one for Jordan, wouldn't it?

I'm glad you found it helpful.
Regarding european countries, it is certainlly easier than USA, even for competitve residencies. I have no idea about the exams you need to write for each country, but you can search through this forum and google would be your friend also. The length of residency programs varies among countries, hospitals within the same country, and certainlly the speciality. For example, Internal medicine in Jordan takes 4 yrs while it's 3 yrs in USA.

In general, the best way to know about something is to ask someone involved in it, this could save you months of searching( this is from a personal experience)

Well, igR, estalishing a new forum of our own sounds reasonable and justified. It is easy to establish one in terms of web designing, hosting, promotions and all other logestics. Nevertheless, I can't gurantee you'll have enough members. For example, we have a forum for our class( med 2003) and it's doing great, but when we wanted to add the students of the next class(2004) to our forum, a huge fuss came up and eventually the idea was rejected....what do u think guys?

Yes, may be our system of studying is playing the major role, SHEETS, no one wants to spend one minute surfing the web, and between his/her hands a piece of paper has all that needed in the exam.
At the same time no time for us to (scratch our heads:D ), how can we find time to do forums?
BUT, we can instead participate in this forum and inform each other in the faculty about this site, and post threads we want in this forum as it can be considered our forum!
What do you think?:wow:

I think I have a hard time communicating with you, we're on two different waves.

Anyway, this wont work for us since as I told you earlier we have our own that statisfies the needs of everyone and no one is willing to give it away.

hey whats up guys ?? oh i never knew that ppl from backhome check this website thats goood well i finished tawjehhey in palestine but im now in the usa ifinished my pre med and im goin to medical school next yr inshlllah good luck to al of u guys

Hey palidaddy,

How's it going? Wish you luck in your med school.
Why don't you share with us your experience about getting a spot in USA as foreing high school grad. I mean many people, including me, would like to know how to go about it in terms of exams you need to write, applications, and so on.

btw, are you from Jerusalem?

Hi Palidaddy,
Congrats, You finished your Pre-medical years. Welcome to MEDICINE.
Good Luck.

I just remembered a thing, it may sound silly, but at least I need the answer.

We use in Jordan these metric units(Meters, cm, Kg,...), is it ok, for now?:) Now, if anyone just decided to go to US, I think he should be familiar with their units (pounds, feet, inches,...).
I know we have tables to convert, and also calculators, but I think it would be better to know these numbers, for example 180 cm in Jordan, or 70 Kg, are numbers we recognize, but do you recognize 6 feet for example from your first sight? I think we should be ready to start getting used to these units, that would be better than getting used to them at USMLE exam time, wouldn't it?;)

My question now, is it silly to think about that? (if not, you can take my words as an advice:cool: )

Hi, there , I think that it was a silly question (no answer is an answer), ok i ASKED question just to say we can post anything we want here, it will be fun.:D

Hey Igr

actually i don't think these stuff are really important to worry about.. there are lots of more important issues you can think about..

anyway, it was just a question, can't say it was a silly one since i don't think mine are that better!!

Freedom of speech reaches beyond the scope of silliness :)

Hello there... i am new around here, i study at JUST - rox you now have someone on your side-
starting my third year next semester
just wanted to say hi to every one. so here you go
............HI.............

Hey cox, How's it goin'?

Wish you luck in your third year, it needs a lot of work. Enjoy your holidays dude.

Do you know that tomorrow is actually our first day in the hospital! Yes, tomorrow! I'm kind of excited but frankly also frustrated because you all guys have 2 extra weeks for holidays while poor 4th yr med students are starting tomorrow.

Anyway, nice to meet you, see you around.

Hey there rox... man lucky you...... this holiday is killing me.... i am so bored of this vacation that i wish i could start uni tomorrow morning

being a medical student is a disaster by it self.... if you're not studying then you'er not doing any thing at all...

so have fun man....

hey rox

just wanted to tell you that i did NOTHING of what you told me! lazy me! i guess i was trying to enjoy as much of the holidays as i could..

i'm starting my third year in a weak.. oh the joy!

by the way, i never knew you guys start goin to the hospital in ur forth year, cuz the way i know it in JU we start at the end of third year, in the summer

anyway, good luck there :) hope it'll be fun! try not to kill a patient ;)

this holiday is killing me
Are you serious? anyway, welcome abroad.

you all guys have 2 extra weeks for holidays

Actually we only have one week not two, cuz in JU we start on 17/9 not 24/9, anyway congrats for the begining of clinical training.:)

Thank you guys!

In the past med students used to start rotating in the hospital in the summer of 3rd year, but not anymore because there's been a major change in the curriculum of the basic years.

Anyway, it's been one day so far, havent's seen any patient yet, but it seems fun.

Please, do keep in touch guys :)

Hey Rox,
I think you have completed about one week clinical practice, how do you feel now? I'm sure you enjoy that.:)
Good luck.

Hello IgR, I appreciate your concern.

Well, it seems fine so far..We start with the introductary course (1 month)..too much theory to read. We are concerned with history taking and physical examination which don't seem to be that easy. The physicians, however, are not so pecky about you mastering your clinical skills from first month...which is good.

Anyway, I hope the future holds pleasent experiences in the next few weeks and months :)

Hey Rox,

You seem happy.

If you want to take USMLE, let me ask please, will you start studying for USMLE Stepo 1 at the same time you do your clinical practice, or you decide to take Step2 before Step 1, will you manage your time between university and USMLE? I can't see that time mangement is that easy.;)
Good Luck.

This is one of the most traditional questions which I myself used to ask alot. As with other related subjects there's is no absolute answer, but from discussing this issue with senior students and others, it seems not to be recommended to write USMLE step 1 before starting your medical training, that is, after finishing your basic years because USMLE Step1 examination is clinically oriented.

I heard about someone who wrote step 1 after 3rd yr, he scored 83 although he was the best in his class. Another wrote it in 5th yr, he scored something like 91.

One of the most serious drawbacks is that you need to wait several yrs( maybe 7yrs) to write it again in case you didnt get a high score.

P.S. the score is the very first criterion they cosider.

The only best chance I see is to study thoroughly usmle review books throughout the basic yrs and write the exam in 5th yr.

One of the best and worthy to consider advantages is that you'll propably start residency 1 yr after your graduation if everything works out right for you. However, it's pretty well-known that you need 2 yrs to get into residency if u write all the exams after graduation.

For me, I think I have no chance, but maybe the door is still open for you since you still have one year to go.

I also recommend you ask those who took the exam.

Hey Rox, Thanks for info.:) I will ask students who took the exam as you said too.

Hi all,

I'm starting 3rd year tomorrow, so I'm quite depressed. :(

Do you suggest any anti-depressants?

heh, wish you luck...

Hey Guys,
So long without posting, studying You know :p

Our exam is on 7/10 and we've just started 17/9 , can you imagine that?

Good Luck!:D

Hey, Good Luck! take it easy and look at the bright side :)

hey ..... im a third year med. student at just ....
its nice to know anyone of you .....
replay .....

Hi Longman,
Welcome abroad! You are at the same 3rd year like me.:D

Hey Rox,
How are you? long time, isn't it?
How is your clinical practice? Which is harder, clinical years or basic science?:p
Wish you luck, happy eid.

Hey IgR, How's it goin'? Long time no see...

Well, clinical rotations are quite more interesting than basic yrs..As you get to rotate in the hospital every day for 4 hrs...you talk to patients, the attending physician, and you have fun! You need to develop your clinical skills since it's not easy even to shake hands with the patient. It's better.

How about you? How's your school goin'? Wish you luck dude :)

Hey you guys.. EID MUBARAK :)
it's been a long time..
glad to kow yall are still posting here
Igr.. how's everything goin? hope you did well in your last exam..
