Can you give me a realistic perspective on the journey I'll be on before making my final decision?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Of course we talk about money.

My peers and I are concerned about our income, and I'm sure some care more than others, the difference between us and you is that we ALL care about our patients MORE. Having a stable, good paying job is a goal, but it is certainly not THE goal.

Props to LizzyM, thanks for the read.

Yes. They care more about their patients than money. That's exactly why they get angry at a patient for refusing to drain a small eye cyst in the corner of her eye (not on the white of the eye) that she knows darn well doesn't need attention unless it gets bigger or causes discomfort (she got a 2nd opinion). The cyst, btw, went away on its own.

Thanks google and Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act for protecting millions of patients from these noble doctors.

Thanks google for protecting millions of patients from unnecessary procedures.

And ACA.

So now that you are not going to medical school what is your plan? Are you going to continue moving up in the family business or go do your own thing?

So that makes us all bad... k.

But you don't read about the thousands of doctors who work their butts off every day to make sure patients get the best and most affordable care, so how could you think any differently?

I wonder how many business/finance execs really care about their consumers. I sure am jealous you're going to be joining that morally-privileged world.

Fair enough.

No business/finance exec cares about their consumers. At all. It's about the bottom line.

The business world is the most morally inept and cutthroat hell hole in the universe. By far. You can't survive unless you sell your soul many times over.

But the worst that can happen is that your money will be gone if you mess up. Money, you can always get back.

With a crooked doctor though, it's potentially your life. Or worse, having to suffer. And there's too many out there. I've met them, shadowed them, made friends with them.

Just read all my examples posted above.

Business decisions never result in people suffering or dying? What world do you live in?

Well both. I closed a deal recently that made me a minority owner of a professional sports team. A very popular sport at that. Not a very good team though. But the better teams are never for sale :/

Two of the best teams in the NBA have sold during the past 12 months.

Not on the open market. Well technically yes, but it's impossible to get a piece. Usually done internally for the good teams.

If by internally you mean the part of the ownership group who is selling sells their share to other current members of the ownerahip group, then yes this happens. However, teams certainly do sell on the open market, but it is an incredibly exclusive market that is limited by more than wealth. Most of the richest families do not own a professional sports team.

Buying/selling sports teams is not a legit business. Is this actually the opportunity you alluded to earlier? Also most businesses are not family-run. I grow ever more skeptical of your story. Inb4 you're actually a trolling Ms1. In any event, I'm leaving this forum to go do something productive over the summer; I suggest you do the same (i.e. let the thread die).

It's amazing how quickly SDN becomes "student doctor lets get free business advice and stock tips network and if you don't rebuttal every asinine and shockingly ignorant post about business that we make you're a troll." As far as you guys and girls are concerned, yes, I'm trolling and don't know anything about business at all. Zero. None. Notta. Nothing. Forget I said anything about it. If the mod can delete this thread that would be great.

If medicine is your fate, stick with it

Nothing more for me to gain here

Nowadays, when I see people as spoiled rotten as you, and realize that a good number of you exist, I just start laughing my arse off. I hope people like you don't completely screw up this country in the next several years.

You need not practise medicine, or even start a job for a few more years until you've stopped acting like a snobby privileged 12 year old child.

OP, have you thought about combining your medical interests with your business savvy and wealth? By starting your own hospital (definitely a viable route for someone with access to old money), you could help your community while maximizing your talents/wealth and making a hell of a lot more than $500k/year!

Since the OP @RNineTime seems like the type of person to keep anonymously checking this thread, I just wanted to say that I am very sorry that you were probably denied by all of your medical schools. I hope this thread made you feel better.

Ignoring the increasingly absurd posts on this (third) page, do know that your backstory fooled no one. I know of no one in your position that, if interested in medicine, would care at all about compensation. I am studying medicine because I love it. My grandparents own one of Asia's largest pharmaceutical companies (PM me for proof and details if you wish)--and guess what? My mom decided to become....a doctor. Internal medicine at an academic center, too. Running a research lab (which means less patients->less pay), she still earns a healthy 200k+/yr.

I worked my own way through high school and now in college (HYPSM in case you're self-conscious about that too). At the moment, I find gastroenterology fascinating, and would love to one day become a research-oriented physician. Or an instructor, integrating clinical and academic duties. Guess what doesn't factor at all into my decision? For someone making some bold claims, you sure seem to be stuck on the paycheck.

The only conclusion that I can make from these posts is that you are distressed at being rejected from medical school, and are trying to convince yourself that it is poorly compensated and also, that you are living some sort of alternate life. Have fun with whatever you do, because that's frankly pretty disturbing.

I hope you are correct in your assertions about OP. I would prefer that these posts are just a short term attempt to self-rationalize a shortcoming than a reflection of their true character. I, however, also know that unfortunately some people just lack much quality.
