Hello
I'm a high school student (grade 11) interested in dentistry but I confused about how it works. From what I hear, you have to take 1-4 of pre dentistry and then obtain a university degree from a dental program and then get licensed by the provincials? Can you guys just explain a bit more about the process after high school? Where do I apply? What do I apply to? As well, what does it take to be a dentist. I am currently just looking around for what I may be interested in, so if you could reply it would be great! Thanks🙂🙂🙂🙂

In order to give an advise we need to know where do you plan to study and practice

I'm assuming you're asking about the process in the U.S.
After high school, you'll apply to and start at your traditional 4 yr college in which you'll major in pre-dent. During this time it'll be wise to build up your CV (resume) by doing extra curriculars like getting involved in volunteer work around your community, shadowing dentists, getting involved in some sort of research/lab work, etc. After you finish your 4 yrs of college, you'll apply to and start 4 yrs at a Dental university. During this 4 yr period (usually towards the end) is when you will take your provincial (regional) licensing exams. After that you're done and can work as a general dentist in the region for which you took the license exam. If you want to specialize in a particular field of dentistry, you'll have to apply to a residency program after 4 yrs of dental school and do the required amount of schooling (usually 3-5 yrs depending on the particular field)
