I've heard some people talk about deferment. Do most schools allow an accepted pre-med start a year later if they want to? Is thier spot in next years class guarenteed? I just want to see what my options are.

DMU 2007

My husband got into a med school and was allowed to defer matriculation one year. However, he could not apply anywhere else in that year. You may want to check with the school you have been accepted to. I don't know if every school will do that or not.

Relish,
The Princeton Review Complete book of Medical Schools says that DMU does defer admissions. However, I don't know if they just defer if you want to or if you have to have certain circumstances to defer. I would think that your spot would be guaranteed though if you defered but I'm not sure. I would take MadE's advise and just call them. Everytime I have ever called DMU's admissions office they have been very nice and helpful. Hope that helps. Later.

To defer a year is not a completely unusual request, although most deans only allow it for good reasons. I was deferred a year b/c I asked in writing with specific reasons (and I paid the matriculation fee for the following year a year early to hold my spot). Just talk to the dean and the chair of admissions...

in feb. 2002 i found out my wife was having triplets!!! I had to call AZCOM to see about the deferment option. While all in the office had a good laugh and wished me luck i still had to write a formal letter to the dean of the school explaining why i deserved a deferment. My point is that it is possible to defer but you need to prove why it is necessary-- and i imagine you need a pretty good reason. You become a liability to the school once accepted, i imagine they just want to know that you are really committed to the task you are about to undertake. Best of luck to you and let me know how things turn out!
