Hey all,

Have an offer on the table from an Academic Institution in Canada which I really like, but the salary is a little lower than I'd like (~35-40K CAD). Anyone have any experience negotiating in this arena...since the government funds a lot of the positions, I'm wondering if it's feasible to ask for a modest increase in salary (I'd settle for 10-20K CAD/yr) or if that's probably a non-negotiable item? Advice appreciated from anyone who's been down this road (If anyone at all)

I don't know the answer as I've only worked in the US. But as a side question, is there a such thing as private practice for pathologists in Canada? i.e. can you join a group which bills the patient's insurance separately and the more volume you do, the more you earn. Or, does the government fund all pathology positions regardless if it's academic or a community hospital and pay according to the national scale?

At my academic institution, it was 0% negotiable. Every pathologist in the department makes exactly the same amount, with same amount of benefits, vacation time, etc. This is how it is at most places I am familiar with (not necessarily all). Some people are able to negotiate for more protected (research) time if they are bringing a significant research career to the institution. The only wiggle room I had at recruitment was some negotiation around recruitment incentives (which were minimal... moving costs + a few extras).

I have never worked in Canada, but I interviewed for several positions in different provinces within the last few years. As far as I know, the majority of larger groups (academic or not) are set up as jachoma described - all the members have exactly the same vacation, benefits and salary, which I believe only vary by province based on negotiated agreements with the provincial health care system. I think there are also some private labs, but my impression was that they primarily get outpatient and/or non-hospital surgery center type specimens and were staffed by pathologists picking up part time/moonlighting work there on top of their primary/regular position to make a little extra money.

I used to hate the idea of socialized medicine but now will be ready for the year when I can just sit in my office and watch television. Cases? Shmases! Slides? Shlides! Meetings? ............
