Canadian Applicant Thread

I got an email from the coordinator of the adult clinical track at U of Windsor saying that I've been selected for a phone interview. It says they're selecting 20 people for a phone interview and will give about 8-10 offers from that. Phone interviews are to be completed by Feb 24th.

Odds are good for you, but still, GOOD LUCK!

Email from POI this morning for a phone interview next week.
Think it's a pre-interview interview (i.e., they are screening applicants before the invite them to UVic).

Apparently they are still in the process of reviewing applications...

Hi everyone!
I am knew to this forum and was really excited to finally find somewhere that has discussions about Canadian schools.
So far, with the clinical programs I applied to I have only heard from York (invited to open house).

I had interviews with professors before the deadline at Concordia and McGill.

Is this for the clinical lifespan or clinical neuropsychology emphasis?

I just got an email from my POI at U New Brunswick for a phone interview on Monday Feb 9.

Has anyone else applied for SSHRC? I just found out that my app got forwarded from my uni selection committee to be forwarded to the selection process at SSHRc (at least that's how i think it works). At any point would you consider letting your departments of interest know that your app has moved forward, or selected for funding?

it may be a little early to say it will be selected for funding but if they ask about your funding status you should definitly tell them that it has been forwarded! congrats by the way!

Email from my POI at University of Saskatchewan for phone interview.

Congrats!
I applied for SSHRC and also had my application forward on by my University. From what I understand, if you are on the "A" list it is very likely that you will get the award, but not guaranteed. I have not let the programs know, I think I will wait for when I hear back about actually getting it, but I did let POIs that I have had extensive contact with know.

When do we hear back about SSHRC? As far as I can gather it is typically in April, is this right?

No specific dates yet...The email I received said, "The Fellowships Office has been advised that SSHRC will announce the results of the CGSM competition in April 2009"

Does anyone know if not getting an invite at this point = didn't make it on the shortlist? 🙁
Thx

hey Nwlc,
you may have gotten on the shortlist (ie. passed the school cut offs) but not the "short-shortlist" (ie. POI's top picks) if you don't have an interview at this time. I didn't get an interview either and this is my second time applying there!

My experience last year went like this...
I didn't get the first round interviews, apparently they choose ppl pretty much based on marks for this round. SFU has a department-wide graduate scholarship competition (ie. ALL graduate students in every department are competing for the same award) and in order to be competative you need TOP marks. if you're not competative, you aren't chosen. HOWEVER, don't give up hope. after interviews went out i got a call in March from my POI saying he was interested in me and I was wait-listed for the program. he's also the one who told me all this info about SFU. i didn't get in because i guess they filled all the spots first round but things could go differently this year!

good luck!

^ Not sure. It did look like a form letter, but no guarantee that they sent out to all shortlisters at the same time, and also don't know if they're holding a second tier in reserve. Edit: I think bonniesbigday was actually a lot more informative...but confirms my general approach to these things. When in doubt, keep hope alive!

Relatedly, anyone else ask for the phone interview option for SFU, and if so, did you get any reply yet? (It's been 11 days now since I got the invite letter and I have not yet received any response re: scheduling.)

hi bonniesbigday and luckyoceania,

Thanks for the info and encouragement. Waiting for any sort of notification is pure torture :scared:

Hi everyone.
I received a call from my POI at U Calgary today. Good luck!

no I haven't!....I did get a rejection e-mail from Guelph this morning...made the waiting list.

Is this child-psych at Guelph? I know I got rejected since I didn't get invited to the interviews last week but I haven't received an email yet. Did you have to email Robyn to find out?

I'm dying to find out about York also...

yes, it's the child clinical program at guelph.......they accepted 6 today out of the 30 who got an interview...the rest either got rejected or made the waiting list.

What do you think made those 6 people competitive? Is it research experience or more about a better match of research interests?

Has anyone heard from the University of Ottawa yet?

I haven't heard from ottawa since my pre-application interview (and i know 3 other ppl that haven't heard anything either). hopefully we hear something soon!!!!

Hey thanks for the message! This is a big relief. So much anxiety!

Besides the lucky person who was contacted by POI, has anyone heard from Dalhousie yet?

Hey Jacks250!

it's me, dd123! (from the bus...)

🙂

If you do end up getting selected for funding, definitely let them know about it. I knew a girl a few years back who was kind of on the bubble with a clin psych PhD program, but once she informed them that she got funding they offered her a spot (obviously I can't say which school, but the bottom line is it may well help your cause and certainly won't hurt it).

Could anyone who applied to McGill check to see if their online status still says items outstanding? Mine has been saying that forever but I know my documents were received by the department. Thanks!

Mine was updated yesterday. It said items outstanding forever, and then poof suddenly it says everything received on December 1st (only two and a half months earlier)

Did they have an interview day, or POIs were just calling people to talk?

I had an in-person interview with my POI, but I think that was just because I'm currently living in Montreal, so it wasn't difficult for me to go there in person.

I would assume that they're still reviewing the apps though. Their deadline was Jan 10, so it's still possible that some profs haven't finished contacting applicants. :luck:

Thanks for checking, mine still says items outstanding but I'm guessing they are now starting to update everyone's files. Good luck!

oops! sorry for any confusion i caused than... i though concordia had an interview day already... guess i was getting it mixed up with another program...

Rejection e-mail from western after my interview....uggh..feel like giving up 🙁

Jacks hang in there--try to think rejection is not personal. They're just choosing the candidate that best fits their program.

Today I had a phone interview with POI at Acadia!!! (one of my top choices!!!) YAY.
If they like me I will have another, more official, phone interview in a couple of weeks.

Just wanted to update that I had a phone interview with my POI at UVic for Clinical Neuropsych, with an in-person interview the week of March 2nd. I also got an e-mail from UWindsor for a phone interview next week.
Good luck everyone!

Thanks psychgrad! that's really sweet 🙂 I wish you all the best!

Has anyone heard from the lifespan development emphasis at UVIC?

Congrats on the interviews!!! Was the Windsor program child-clinical?

I'm telling myself to not take rejection personally also inorder to 'innoculate' myself for a possible rejection in two or three weeks from my first choice program. At least you found out fairly early--I'm unable to concentrate at all on the other deadlines I have. I'm suffering from anxiety, flashbacks of the interview, crazy dreams, mild depression--kinda sounds like PTSD...universities should have a disclaimer on their application checklist.

hahhahaa that's so funny yet so true!!! I think applying for clinical would definitely qualify as a traumatic experience lol!!!
ps. Got accepted into Queen's clinical today!! which is really wierd because I didn't even get contacted for an interview?!!
