Hi everyone,

I am a Canadian student who will be applying to U.S. dental schools this upcoming cycle. However, I have applied previously (not this cycle but the cycle before) and was unsuccessful with a cGPA ~3.43, sci 3.40 and a low bcp of 2.7 and DAT 20/20/20, RC 25.

I stayed for a 5th year at my university after graduation and my new stats will be ~ cGPA 3.57-6, sci 3.5 and bcp 3.3-4 with DAT the same but will be studying extra hard for it and re-taking it with hopes for a higher score.

My question is if I have a decent shot this time around as I am really stressing about my chances. I have never received an interview. I will apply to all the private schools and my dream would be Buffalo.

Other aspects: 100+ shadowing general dentists, volunteering w dental assisting abroad, lots of volunteer work and sports activities.

Any advice? Tips to sharpen my application before the next cycle?

I applied in 3rd year of uni and now am finishing 5th year so I feel like time is just going by and I am going nowhere which gets depressing. Honesty is appreciated!

Thanks a lot

if you don't have any individual scores below 20 i'd keep those dats

looks like it was your low gpa that did you in last time

if you apply in june/broadly you should do ok getting interviews at canadian friendly schools

buffalo's really hard to get into for canucks

Which schools are Canadian friendly schools? I know that many of my friends actually got into NYU and I also heard that Boston is accepting quite a large number of international students as well... Are there more besides them?

Many thanks in the advance!

I hope you get in this time. I am exactly in your situation. I applied with 3.4s this cycle and no interviews ( application was completed and sent late july though). I am graduating this year too and will have to take more courses but not at my school. I plan to take them at an easier institute since american schools dont care where you take courses.
I agree with the above comment, your DAT is good if you dont have any 17s in Bio or RC.
Your GPA is now within the range of acceptance for MANY schools. Keep the GPA, and apply first week of June and let me know if you got any interviews. ALL the best

those two and tufts are teh big ones

other than that nova, case, temple, usc maybe, you can google for a more exhaustive list

"For the Canadian/International applicant, your choice of schools is very limited. For the most part, you will bank on the large expensive private schools (or should I say, they will bank on you, zing!). This list is not comprehensive, but to my knowledge, the schools that are Canadian applicant friendly are: NYU, Tufts, BU, USC, UoP, Temple, Buffalo, Detroit Mercy, Pitt, Penn, Case, Nova, Columbia, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan, and Midwestern AZ (no information on the new schools Western and Midwestern IL is available). If you are a Canadian applicant, I'd recommend further investigation into these particular institutions. Also, if you have only taken the Canadian DAT, check with each school individually to see which schools will only accept the American DAT."

Pretty sure tufts and columbia haven't accepted canadians in a while.. I was a Canadian applicant twice. Got in the second time.. but did a thesis-based masters to increase my chances. I would invest in buying the ADA book.. it will save you lots of time in researching canadian friendly schools and i wish i had bought it! your stats have improved a lot and if your dat scores aren't expired i would just use those. good luck!

would've saved me some of 'em application moneys had i chanced upon you sooner

I wasted cash on both Tufts and Columbia. Live and learn. That said, I mostly applied to Canadian-friendly schools and didn't get interviews from many. Apply broadly but don't expect schools to trip over themselves to get you in because you're from up north. It's quite the opposite.

Perhaps if I applied earlier (I was really only complete by late August/early September) I'd be singing a different tune. Apply as early as possible!

This is very true. Apply to many schools. I never got interviews from the two biggest canadian friendly schools (nyu and bu).. so definitely apply to most if not all schools that have accepted canadians in the last few years! and if you are considering to re-write the DAT, maybe write the US one, I think that the US schools prefer those scores. If you have any other questions PM me.

Thanks for the link, and I will definately apply early, in June, as I have also learned it very important.

Do you guys think I should be looking into masters/SMP programs in the States to apply to right now as well? I am not sure if it is necessary/worth it... Initially I was planning to actually have a real gap year with no schooling and volunteer, get active, travel etc. and do things I haven't been able to lately

But I'm thinking, if I do not get in...again...I should be bettering my application...🙁

In fact, this year I was going to be doing the masters program at Midwestern but at the last minute decided to do a 5th year instead, still not sure if I made the right decision with that 😕

Thanks for the advice

I don't think you need a 5th year. Just graduate on time and take some open studies. Having a degree is a requirement for some d-schools, so once you have one you'll be eligible for lots of schools. Apply broadly. Take medical classes as open studies to prepare you for d-school, not just random geology or drama classes...

He did a 5 th year , that's why his GPA went up !!
OP, did you get like straight As in 10 courses or something . that's a huge jump , good job

Haha yes I am currently finishing a 5th year, received my degree last summer. And yes, I took 3 courses in the summer, full course load (10 courses) this year as well as a handful of online courses (to really load up on credits and bump up as much as possible in the given time period I have)... I have been aiming for all A+'s! I realized I had to if I wanted a decent shot... so yes in general straight A's (incl. A-'s).
