Hi,

I just wanted to ask you all for some input, I hope this is the right sub-forum for that. I didn't want to ask what my chances are, but I do need some advice. I just graduated from a US school, but I am a Canadian citizen. I plan to apply to medical school next cycle. I have a LizzyM 73-75, which I know isn't very high for an international applicant. But I have a ton of extracurriculars that are relatively unique and meaningful, very solid letters of recommendation, and I'm hoping to put together a compelling narrative through my application.

I was wondering if you all knew of any resources that could help me put a school list together. On MSAR it states schools that accept Canadians/Internationals, but just because they accept their applications doesn't mean they're actually considered. It seems like acceptance percentage for internationals is low across the board, so I'm looking to apply broadly and hopefully target schools that are friendly to Canadians (versus other international applicants). For instance, I think that Mayo is friendly to Canadian applicants.

Do you all think gaining my B.S. in the States will help?

Thanks for your input! @Goro @gyngyn, it would be great to hear from you and any other adcom on this site!

There are multiple people in our class at Geisel that are Canadian citizens (I think). So there's one =)

Invest in a subscription of MSAR and target schools that accept 2+ Canadians yearly

Dartmouth's 2016 MSI class has at least 1 and as many as 4 Canadians.

OP, you numbers seem worth a shot; follow mwooster's wise advice.

I can't recommend getting another BA/BS degree in the US. Get US citizenship or green card instead.

I know NYMC has many Canadian students, as do a lot of private schools.

MSAR is your friend. Get a good school list going and keep on top of things. Early application is especially important. I think Goro missed that you already have your degree from an American school; I'm not sure how much help this will be but it won't hurt you.

Where do you intend to practice? That could inform your decisions from here out about citizenship as well.

Cheers!

Hi,

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I appreciate the advice about checkin MSAR, I actually have a subscription already. The only issue is that it doesn't separate Internationals from Canadians; some schools specifically say that they consider Canadians more strongly, which is more of what I'm looking for. Is there no resource that could give me information about that?

Yeah I already received my degree from a US School 🙂 Some schools state on their websites that they give strong preference to those with a US degree, so I was thinking that it may potentially help me.

As of now, I want to practice in the States. I don't want to close the door on going back home, however, so I'm currently not considering DO schools.

Can you apply for dual citizenship? I'm not sure how that works but it may be a big help especially with residency since you want to practice here.

I think further down the line, that might be something I look into. It's hard with a student visa and I don't see it in my immediate future. I'm currently in a serious relationship with someone who is applying this cycle, so we both aren't ready for marriage. But if we can make it through medical school, hopefully at that point we can get engaged and that can be one route for me.

Step one for me is just getting in for now haha

Of course! It's a lot I know, and a big hassle that I've never been through. Just pointing out that residency will be easier with citizenship and if it's something that takes a long time, consider starting sooner rather than later.

You can be sure that the schools that only consider Canadian internationals matriculated Canadians.
Other than that, look for the schools that consider both and have at least a handful of internationals.
If they only matriculate 2 or less, it doesn't matter if the prefer Canadians. They are probably inside candidates.

Under acceptance data in MSAR, you can scroll down to a map showing the states where students matriculated from. Below the map it also lists the countries where students matriculated from. Make sure Canada is listed. Then at least one person from Canada got in out of all international students, unfortunately it won't say how many.

I know this is pre allo but MUSCOM devotes a significant part of each year's class to Canadians, could be worth an app OP.

EDIT: I meant MSU com as in Michigan state osteo.. not sure if the MD program at Michigan state also has this Canadian applicant stipulation.
