Is it true that Canadian dental schools only look at your best 2 years of your bac. degree if you have done more than 4years? And those two years are calculated as your GPA?

I've only ever heard of dropping your worst year if you've completed 4 yrs.

Depends on the school - check out their websites.

i know for sure that UWO only looks at 2 years. UBC looks at 3.

i'm pretty sure alberta and toronto look at all 4

UofA drops your worst year if you've done 4 or more provided that it isn't your most recent year and that it is not the only year you've taken 30 credits.

I believe UofT actually drops your worst yr out of 4 - I could be mistaken

It's best to look at the individual school websites - I know for certain that Westen calculates your average from two years only.

smcohen, when did you submit your application? i see that you have an interview from columbia; it's the school im gunning for😀
just wanted to know how early people submitted their applications.

infact, when did everyone else submit their apps. almost everyone seems to have atleast one interview. 🙂
i fear i might be late. application was submitted aug 10th and complete at all schools by october 20th. does it really hurt your chances if youre not offered a date before december 1st?

All this dropping of years and stuff scares me some...

I mean it probably makes things way more competitive right? I mean, Im sure that leaves a lot of people with 4.0's

What if they discount the year you took orgo? does that mean they never ever look at your orgo grade? or do they just drop those year in terms of GPA, but still look at them?

they look at last 2 years.. Heard it from friend who is attending there right now. and that's how she got in.

ive interviewed at uwo twice in the past two years and heres how they work:

they look at your two best years, provided you have taken 5 credits (100% load) in each year. you need a minimum of 4 credits for a year to be considered for calculation, but you will be penalized for that 4 credit year.
additionally, western will wait for your final year marks to come out, and if your final year is one of your best years, they will consider it among your best two.
also, if you apply during your 5th year (the so called 'victory lap' year), western will average your scores as follows, i believe:
1st year: remains as it is
2nd and 3rd year: averaged together so as to have ONE cumulative percentage
4th year: stays as it is, but since 2nd and 3rd year are avged together, 4th is now your 3rd year mark
5th year: stays as it is and becomes your 4th and final year mark.

Uoft will drop your worst year, provided you apply AFTER you have graduated, since uoft needs at least 3 years worth of marks and they release all their decisions before your final year marks come out.

hope all of this helps. people aiming for western should make it a point to have their honours degree completed by 4th year. i was told by the adcom that i had been waitlisted both times because i did not have a degree (i decided to go for a victory lap in 5th year). honours degree holders get a 5% bonus added to their final average.

For the current first year class at Western, I believe only a couple people were admitted without a degree. Also it helps if you have a graduate degree if marks are average as you get even more bonus points.

Sorry for the slow reply - I hadn't checked on this thread for a couple of days. I submitted my application in May and had all my LORs in by mid-June.
