Hi ,

I am a Canadian who finished my residency in Internal Medicine in the United States. I currently work under a J1-B Visa in Massachusetts and will be completing 2 of the 3 required years this coming September.

My question is - my fiance lives in New Jersey and I was wondering if it is possible to transfer to a job there and finish my last required year assuming I have a sponsorship for the visa. If so, it is difficult and how long would the process take? Would I need an immigration lawyer and how would I begin the process?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You

In general, no. You would need to prove "extenuating circumstances". It's not totally clear what that means, but according to USCIS, if you look at FAQ Q3, closure of your employer "may" be considered an extenuating circumstance. If "you don't have a job anymore" doesn't count, the bar is pretty high.
