I have no idea what MSU's out of state stats are like, but as far as I can remember, MSU's OOS tuition is above $60K. That's something to consider.

Yes, MSU is a good school.

As far as grades go, I'm not sure. Sounds reasonably solid to me though.

Hey guys,

Im a Canadian and graduated with a 3.0 and a 30R MCAT. I had a very strong upward trend of grades (ie 3.5 3rd year and 4.0 last year). I think i had like a 2.7 for 2 years or something. Anyway, as a Canadian does anyone have advice as to which is the best school too apply to for D.O?

I really like the location of Michigan State and it seems quite reputable from what i have been reading. With my grades do you think I have a chance there?

My extracurriculars are quite large so i wont list them all. Some of the main things are like volunteered in Childrens hospital for 3 years, University hospital for a year, went to Ecuador to shadow doctors for a month and rebuilt orphanage, worked in diabetes lab for a year (got 250 hours in a year), Anesthetic lab for a year, Ski patrol for two years, St John Ambulance first aid for 3.5 years.....etc sports every semester. Fraternity...etc

I noticed that MSU has 40% of its app for Extracurricular so im assuming I would do decent there. But ya for grades??? Any thoughts??

Thank you for your time and advice

ps i did search for stuff about Canadians, but it was quite old

Thanks for fast response. Im interested in PCOM as well as Pacific Northwestern. The more and more i read on here it seems PCOM is one of the better schools. However, I dunno if my GPA is high enough? I was hoping my MCAT would make up for it and my extracurricular.

Any thoughts?

I realize appreciate peoples time

Well, I don't want to say too much since I'm not comfortable with saying how DO schools will see a particular candidates grades, but, the upward trend in your GPA is impressive. Schools generally do notice that. MCAT seems pretty solid too - above avg. for DO schools. With your ECs and volunteering, the only thing I can think of now that could be a deficiency is in reference letters and personal statement. You may also want to check which schools accept foreign grads. I'm not sure which ones do or don't.

If I were you, I would apply broadly (as every SDNer will likely say). Don't simply think, "I want to go only to MSU, PCOM, and PNWU." You should look for schools that fit you, but while it would be wonderful to go to your dream school, getting into medical school can be difficult. I know too many kids who were good candidates who only applied to 4 schools and got nowhere. The process is long and expensive, and if it doesn't go well, you're out another year of life.

Other than that, that only advice I can think of regarding your chances is perhaps to call admissions offices and ask what their policy on foreign students is. Good luck from a fellow (former) Canadian.

MSUCOM is a solid/reputable DO school.... but as an OOS/International applicant would you really be willing to dish out around 64K in tuition (translates to 80k+ a year in COA...)??

haha I dont think the exchange rate is THAT bad.As of right now, our dollar is perfectly equal. 64 US k is 64 Can k. So its almost a better deal to go south for us. If the currency was worth for use than ya i totally agree with you.

Its just with my grades I dont know a lot about which schools i can get into? THe more i read the more PCOM seems like a good choice (although I dont know the difference between the two PCOMs)

Thoughts?

Cheshyre,

Thanks for the advice! Are you currently in the states at a D.O school?

I moved stateside years ago. I'm currently finishing my last application (it's late, I know).

I think the best place to look for some of these info would be the CIB from the AACOM websites. There are few schools that outright doesn't even take many out-state students let along international students. PCOM/MSU-COM you mentioned are all reputable schools but make sure you look around more. As previously stated, LoR could be a factor as many schools many require DO LoR which can be hard to obtained in Canada. (I'm from Toronto, so tried but had to go to state to obtain DO shadowing experience). Canada has student line of credit that can cover up to 150K but that definitely won't be enough for a the huge OOS tuition of MSU, think about these. Definitely do more research on the AACOM website. PM if have any question regarding application process, always glad to help a fellow Canadian out 😀
