Hey guys,

Im currently in my fourth year of a BSc program in Canada, and have a cGPA of 3.0-3.1. I recently wrote my MCAT and got 27R (8P, 9B, 10V). I am interested in going the DO route.
I was wondering what you guys think i should do next year. Should i take another year of classes, "special year" to raise my marks and apply, or should i pursue a second degree. This would take me 2 years.

Thanks so much for any feedback. I really appreciate it.

I'd say apply early...you never know.

I'm going to try applying when the next cycle begins :xf:. However, i do want to be prepared in case i receive a rejection :scared:. What would my best bet be? a fifth year or a second degree? And if a second degree, does it matter that its just a 2 year degree?

From what i understand of Canadian applicants to US schools is you need extremely high stats. With your stats you have very little chance unless you immigrate to the US.

A person who's better with Canadian applications who's called Bannie, would say that you'd be better applying to SGU.

In my opinion, I think you can retake you low classes try to get a 3.4 and try to get a better mcat.

I dont know if thats completely true. I got a few private messages from fellow Canadians who said they got in my stats (3.2gpa and 30R MCAT). I dont think you need a 3.4 although obviously it helps.

The biggest problem for us Canadians is getting the DO reference since DO's are a lot rarer in our country. We can apply to 19 US DO schools though which is pretty good compared to our like 11 Canadian MD schools that all have 3.7-4.0 gpa requirements.

Have you gotten a DO reference? If so just curious but which city you from?

You can shadow a MD. But, even that is difficult because of some insurance policies 🙁

Ya dam Canada and their crazy ass laws lol

I had to go to Ecuador to shadow doctors, although it was a whole different level of shadowing because we watched ER surgeries up close, helped out a bit in the ER (stiches) and got to be a family doctor for a day (sketchy, i know). Have you done anything similar over-seas?

No, I have just volunteered in my local hospital shadowing nurses  Never seen a doctor at work...

That doesnt surprise me at all. I think you are lucky actually to have shadowed a nurse, I dont think you can do that in Vancouver at the main hospitals I have volunteered at

No i haven't gotten a DO reference yet. I'm from toronto, and i looked into finding a DO in the city and there seem to be quite a few. I need to buckle down and start asking if i can shadow them this summer or volunteer at their clinic or get involved in some way.
Hmmm ... so maybe i will take an extra year rather than another degree and retake some of the courses i did really bad in. That should hopefully boost my application :luck:

Hey,

I was in your situation about a year ago too. Also from TO, I've decided to do an extra year which did help my gpa. Your total MCAT score is a bit low but np with your verbal so like ppl have mentioned, you never know. Its entirely possible if you apply early this year. However, if you don't get DO LoR its going to limit your opportunity quite much. Try search on canadian osteopathic website, i heard there is a DO in missisauga area. Although I didn't get mine from that person, its worth a try if you aren't considering taking a week or so vacation to the States for shadowing. Any questions regarding the application process, just PM me 😀
