Hey all,
Are any of you studying on something other than an I-20? I'd really like to know what options I have so I'd appreicate any help! Thanks 🙂

Canadian here, and I have no idea what I-20 is. Did you go to the med games this past week-end ?

I-20 aka Student visa. Are you studying in the US under another visa? And nope, I didn't go to the med games! Thanks for replying.

Oh, I get it. I'm a canadian student studying in Canada. * wonders what he's doing on SDN * 😉

I don't know what other option there is. I'm on an I-20-- I have been since undergrad. Once you're a resident and working, I think it switches to a J-20 or something

You don't really have options, and I thought it was F-1 not I-20. I mean you get I-20 but its an F-1 student visa. When you go to residency, then u can get an H-1 or J-1 as someone mentioned. But you can't have 2 visas if thats what you were getting at. Or you can't go to school on a TN and work concurrently. Good luck.

canadian here proud and true, and of course there is another option, i have a green card to keep me here.

Ramoray,
First of all, yay Canadians! How'd you go about getting a green card? Thanks for replying!

You're absolutely right, it's an F-1 visa, the I-20 is just the thing they put in your passport to show customs officers when going back and forth.

How do you go about a Green Card, well here it goes:

1) Marry an American and get them to sponsor you.

2) Apply for DV green card lottery, if you were born in a country other than Canada.

3) Get employment in US and get your employee to sponsor you for a greencard.

4) Get a family member who is a US citizen to sponsor you.

Also to even apply for green card, when getting employement, you have to be in H-1 status and then apply for green card from H-1 status. Overall its a long and arduous process. Also you don't have a chance for an employer sponosiring you, only if you have a certain field, like a nurse, PT, pharmacist and so forth.

Greencard takes too much time for you to get it in like 3 months or even 2 years for that matter. It's not a quick fix like student visa, or TN. Even H-1 is difficult to get, you basically need to have secure employment and it costs like 5000 dollars. Good luck.
