CANADIANS WHO GOT INTO US DENTAL SCHOOLS..?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've got accepted, but having trouble securing full tuition at this moment. Will be trying different options. It's not fun for us Canadians, the currency rate and the whole NAFTA issue is concerning. 🙁

So I asked the TD financial adviser and was told: TD bank will lend a denal student the money at prime rate which is 0.25%. He said come in with acceptance letter 3 months before school starts to start the loan application.
If you want to be a dentist and you do not get accepted in Canada you should take.

amariesa: if you got into all of these schools you are very lucky. There were many Canadians that were placed on waitlist for UDM, UB, U Mich with outstanding stats ( they will most likely get into a Canadian school). And many US schools do not accept Canadians at all, so it is not part of America.

when was ur app. complete? and did u have all ur interviews pe-dec. ?

I was told by U Mich and U Buffalo that pre Dec or post Dec interview does not matter, bcs they still have many spots after January and they accept until 1st day of school which is in August. Many universities such as UNY & U Buffalo interview until end of Feb. People change minds even after deposits are paid. U Buffalo accepts Canadians only after April.

Complete in early June. I still have some interviews but out of those Ive been accepted to, 4 were pre-dec.

Maybe. From my personal experience, I did not feel like an international student. From their websites, many schools say they do not have preferences in vs out of state. From the AADSAS book, international applicants do just as well in some private schools as out of state applicants.

Prime - .25
Cystinosis: ya, prime - 0.25% is good rate if you have no cash. but best if you have enough savings. Some schools want you to deposit $200K

Hey guys, another Canadian here. Anyone else not hear anything from Temple, NYU, BU, Case, UoP, and Buffalo. I submitted my app late August and these schools have been dead silent for me :/
Stats: ~3.6 oGPA , ~3.6 sGPA
21 AA and 22 TS DAT

With your stats you shoul be invited for interview from some of these schools.
I applied to Buffalo and had my interview but they said will notify Canadians only after April .Temple, UoP, Case is not interviewing Canadians for some reason. I know few Canadians united to NYU but haven’t heard of anyone accepted there. I had 6 interview invites:
UDM, U Mich, NOVA, Denver, Minnesota, Buffalo, so I know these schools look at Canadians . Also UDM accepted some Canadians. I got accepted by NOVA and U Mich so far.

I have seen people on SDN from Canada have interviews at UoP, Case, and Temple. I was just wondering when I would know if I am rejected at these 6 schools I have heard nothing from. I was also wondering if other Canadians have heard nothing too from these 6 schools too. Kind of frustrating to not know my fate for this long. I am currently waiting on responses from Minnesota (interview here) and UDM (wait list) but its frustrating to hear nothing from those 6 other schools.

I applied to a bunch of schools in early-December to mid-December.
I have had replies from both BU and UDM, and currently on the waitlist for UDM.
I'm surprised with your stats you didn't get one from BU, since yours are very close to mine.
GPA is around 3.7 and 23 AA 22 TS 22 PAT 21 RC

So much misinformation, so little time.

Canadian here, no interviews from Canadian schools but got acceptances to my top 2 in the states; Buffalo and NYU. I was waitlisted in Temple and received interviews from BU, UCSF, UDM, and MWA but did not attend them. I was really hoping for an interview in Canadian schools but I guess my stats were not strong enough. PM me if anyone needs any info.

3.86gpa 22AA

If you choose the much cheaper school (Buffalo) you are still looking at $400,000 USD in tuition. How will you fund that? And have you given thought to how you will repay it?

Good stats: I have almost same stats and received invite from UofT and McGill (UofT calculated GPA=3.9 and 20DAT 24PAT). I know Canadian D2 student at NYU and she really likes it, there are some Canadians at NYU ( she said she knows about 15 ) .
funding? need to go to the bank and ask for a loan which you will receive , I think best rate is given by CIBC I was told by that NYU D2 student.
I chose NOVA if I do not get into U of T

3.6 GPA/21 AA. Wait listed at UDM and Nova. Haven't heard from BU, Temple, or NYU since receipt of my app in late September.

Well like all other Canadians, a little over half of it will be loans and the rest would have to be from family support. Unfortunately there's no other way and Buffalo is not as cheap as I thought it would be.

I don't think I'm your standard applicant given how uninformed I was the whole cycle but I got into 2 of the 3 schools I applied for (in Tufts and Boston University, no answer from Harvard yet). BU also offered about 1/4 of the tuition as scholarship 4 years. Applied end of October, GPA 3.7, DAT all 22. I like that US schools look at your extracurriulars. My grades arent stellar but I did get involved with a lot of extracurriculars and I think that's what the schools like.

I don’t want to be negative but I am kind a shocked looking at your stats & I know many others with much better stats, like 3.9 and DAT 23 , 24 who got waitlisted. I was told by many US dental schools they do not give scholarships to Canadians unless you r resident of US .
I have been studying in US

I have no incentive to lie :/ I'm not much of an academic. I don't really go for high scores, but I aim for more extracurriculars since I'm a pretty hands on person.

But then again I'm sure there's people here that make up stuff.

I've committed to UDM - will be staying back in the States afterwards.

There will be quite a few Canadians at UDM starting this year🙂

Did you receive a US post-secondary education? I smell a white lie, Tufts doesn't accept Canadians unless they completed a post-secondary education in the US.
I agree with you, don't believe everything you see here.

I did my undergrad in montreal

Where did you do your post grad? We’re not accusing you of anything, just curious about the process! Congrats on the acceptances!

I didn't do any post grad. I just have a BSc. Thanks!
My bad—I meant post secondary! Tufts accepts Canadians who completed their post secondary in the US, no?

Accepted: Indiana, MWU, UPenn, NOVA, UDM, Temple. Waiting for several others to make a decision.

Accepted into one school, I expect few more acceptances on the way. Contemplating on whether to attend, loans are too large. Btw, how do you all plan on funding your dental education?

what school did you get accepted to if you don't mind me asking?

NYU & Boston used to accept quite a few Canadians , I wonder how many they are accepting this cycle. I see lower numbers from the posts here this year. From ADEA previous years report: From Canada there were 532 applications to U.S. dental schools & Accepted:116.
you can see a free report on ADEA website that shows how many Canadians were accepted to individual schools: SDE1_2014-15_final6

I am Canadian and presently completing my BSc in US. I corresponded with Tufts' admissions and they wrote me that Canadian applicants must complete Bachelors degree , including all the required prerequisites in a US university to be considered for admission. No exceptions..

tiny50: It helps if you have rich parents that can pay for you.
I have been researching it and the best rate for dental students is given by Royal bank I think , it is (prime rate -.25), go to their website and you can see their terms like , 2 years grace period, etc. TD I think is similar, The most any bank will give you is $275k and osap ( or your provincial plan) max would be about $40-50k total. the rest you need to borrow from private sources, like parents. Some accepted students can't start dentistry because they can't secure funds and some private schools want you to show that you have$200K in your account. Go to "On the topic of $400,000 debt" discussion in Forums.premed101 to see some comments from dentists.

I'm canadian and was accepted into tufts as well, so I'm guessing they're less restrictive this year

Did you do your bachelors in Canada? I called them 10 times before and during the application cycle and they told me they only accept US citizens or Canadians that did their undergrad in U.S.

Yup I did my bachelors in Canada, during the interview they just asked me to send in an unofficial transcript so they could verify some courses

WOW! Thanks man!
Would you mind sharing your stats if you are okay with it? When did you interview?
