Just pulling up an old thread that seems appropriate at this time...
Also, our dean told each of us that he expects that we give at least a week cancelation notice to programs that we won't be able to interview at. Anything less will buy us a nice 1-on-1 with him should it make it back to him. If a program complains that they want more than a week, he will back us up on it and tell them a week is sufficient.
He also said that we should both call (more professional) and send an email (as proof should anything come up) when we cancel.
