Ok I know this topic has been discussed on SDN but I feel that with competitiveness increasing every year, whether or not to cancel an interview becomes a different issue each year.

I've already had quite a few interviews and I'm pretty sure I didn't offend any of my interviewers (at least I hope not 😀). When I applied, I didn't even think I would get many interviews because of my low GPA so this was a nice surprise. Now, I'm wondering whether I should cancel the interview to the school that is not my top choice. I applied to it because I would go to it if it's the only school I got into and it's close to home, but it's not one of my top choices.

I know people say that before Dec 1, you should go to all interviews but I kind of feel bad taking someone's spot who might really want to go there. I asked my family and they told me different things. That I should cancel because I will hopefully get an acceptance from the other interviews. That I should NOT cancel because I might go to that school and fall in love with it. So I'm in a dilemma!! Maybe my SDN family can help me? 😉

if its right near your house, then you dont have to pay for traveling costs or hotel stays. What is the downside of going to your interview?....waking up? Unless you have about 5-7 interviews, you should prob go. If you have a low gpa, then you should prob consider going cause you never know how the ADCOM will review your app( even if your interview went well).

I was wondering the same thing for myself... How many interviews do you have total?

The worst thing that could happen if you cancel the interview is that you don't get accepted to any other schools and have to wait another year. The worst thing that could happen if you go to the interview is that you don't like the school. I understand your thinking, but I would try to be safe and go to all possible interviews until you got accepted to your first choice school. And dental school is very competitive, there's no room for nobility here😉.

Have you considered rescheduling to after Dec 1? If you're taking classes you could just tell them that in order to be responsible with your studying you need to reschedule some interviews for after this semester.

Does this school cost more than others where you have interviewed? Even if it is impressive you may still choose against it due to finances.

I have 7 interviews...

And by "close to home", I mean it's only an hour flight as opposed to a 5 hour one loll

Btw, you guys are doing a really good job convincing me to go to the interview 😀

Hmm that's something I hadn't considered! That way, I can still interview there if I need to after Dec 🙂

The only interview I cancelled is LECOM. My justification is that I have 9 other interviews, and their school isn't built yet. And their tuition is going to be very high as well as their Jan 15th deposit (2000$). But I cancelled a month in advance.

if its very expensive, and you have 7 interviews, i think you will be fine then. You dont have to go.

I know there's nothing bad about going to an interview, but in my case, it's taking a big drain on my wallet. I've been invited to a couple schools that I have no interest in going, but applied as safety schools. For me, I think I will end up canceling a couple of interviews because my top choice is UOP and they basically accept all of their pre-dec and I feel safe no matter how many people say "you're not safe until you're accepted." Unless yours is UOP as well, I would suggest you attend all your interviews.

I cancelled LECOM.

Yeah, I applied to 20+ schools. Interviewing at 7 schools I would want to go to. Tufts is the last school I will wait to dish out money for an interview. The rest, I plan on withdrawing from if I get invited pre-december, only because I absolutely know I knocked 4 of my interviews out of the park. So, to the OP, if you're absolutely confident in your interviews..i say go ahead and withdraw. Yeah, nothing is set in stone until you get your acceptance letter, but if your admissions committees are raving about you in the interview and telling you to come research with them on the side...then I think you're safe.

If I had followed the same thinking that you are now having (which i very nearly did) I would not now be in San Francisco and loving school.... Honestly, you will never know unless you go. Each school has a different vibe or culture if you will and getting a feel for each is great, plus you get to travel. Furthermore, I met some awesome people at every interview I went to and now I have connections with people in a few other schools and am even going to visit a new friend i made during an interview in NY! Plus, without an acceptance NOTHING is for sure.... who knows maybe this interview will generate your ONLY acceptance,

Just go, end of story,

JB

Yeah, but UCSF would have definitely been in my top choices of schools to wait for lol. I, personally, do not care to hear back from some of my schools. I would probably even defer their acceptances (if i'm lucky) and just try to interview at my top schools again next year.

You have nothing to loose by going to the interview... but do have A LOT to loose by not attending.

Another 400 bucks is a drop in the bucket, compared to the cost of dschool.... it would be foolish not to go IMO.

I'm going to every interview... not going to turn down an offer until I have an offer in my hand. I really don't want to do this again.

7 interviews, congrats!

do you mind sharing your stats?

Cancel if it's a lame ass school. I'm not going to mention any specific ones since it may offend someone but we all kind of know which ones fall into this category lol. All the power to you for scoring 7 interviews.

Sure. 3.5GPA, 3.3 science GPA. DAT 24AA 22TS 22 PAT.

I ended up rescheduling it to after December instead of cancelling it. It's not a "lame" school lol but I don't want to be spending money on it if there's a possibility that I may get an acceptance from another school Dec 1 🙂xf::xf::xf:)

Thanks to all of you for your great advice 🙂

a predent profile would actually be nice for you, since you have so many schools to interview at and that information could really be useful to most sdn'ers. just a thought. 🙂

The honest truth is that sometimes cancelling interviews is a painful necessity. I've had to cancel LECOM and USC interviews because honestly, with my course load I just couldn't justify them. It really is a judgement call. If you are not a huge fan of the school's location to begin with, and you feel safe with your other interviews, I don't think cancelling is a bad idea.

On the other hand, if your schedule and finances allow, absolutely, I'd say go for it. I have enjoyed my interviews so far, and wish I could take many more. Seeing schools and meeting other applicants is a good time, it's just too bad being a full time student and having a limited budget cuts into the opportunity.

I am waiting on Tufts, Columbia, and UCLA yet. Boston and NYC I can drive to, and I would totally take a second trip to California for UCLA...my dream school...ah happy thoughts :luck:

Honestly I am taking interviews as a unique opportunity to see the country. Ive got friends in NYC and Boston and San Antonio so I am going to just go make a fun weekend out of it. Tampa I'm not quite sure what to do with... craigslist is a good place to find friends right?

Took a trip to Cali for the first time last weekend for an interview...

Stopped by LA, 👍

No kidding, the folks over there are super friendly, and the ladies are pretty fine in DTLA

Would LOVE to go to school in Cali, not to mention Western U is now my top choice! I know it's a new school and all, but drill in your hands the first day and state of the art totally new equipment and buildings? I'm not complaining.

Yeah, I can't wait to see Western. I'm sure it's really nice!
