i have an interest in cancer pain/rehab but do not want to do interventional pain. I am applying for a cancer rehab fellowship but not sure that it would give me enough "credentials' to practice pain. Ideally, I would like to do impatient consults for pain/outpatient follow up for pain/rehab issues. MAybe some botox for pain but have no interest in epidurals, etc. T the end of my PGY3 I feel pretty comfortable dealing with post op impatient pain once patient is off the epidural but not sure if that would suffice in cancer pts. Also not sure how to get a job doing cancer rehab. any advice about my plan?

I like that,
impatient consults for pain

cancer rehab and cancer pain is a very interesting field - requires collaboration with oncologists - there are some academic programs that you could probably find a position at - and if u wanted to go private, u would have to create that niche and make contacts, and start a program. need to pitch that program to someone. u might consider remaining as junior faculty at your fellowship or another academic institution while learning what it takes to "start" a program and secure funding. The other option is to work with hospice/palliative care. u can also do outpatient stuff by marketing to oncologists. i would also get in touch with dr. stubblefield and custido in NYC - I like their model of care.

No, I ended up not going for the fellowship, but will be making cancer rehab a large part of my practice.
