Hey just got a quick question for you guys. I had a canker sore (grey center, looked like tear in tissue) on the inside of my bottom lip that was clearing up. I saw the dentist for my regular check-up on Saturday. Today I realized that in the exact spot where my canker sore had been disappearing was a clear-fluid filled blister. Is there some connection (the hygienist sprayed my teeth with some strange tasting solution before scraping the tartar off them, not sure what it was?) and what should I do about it? I've never had a canker sore turn into a blister before.
thanks.

She would've made sure the dentist knew to pay attention to it during the exam. If he didn't say anything to you (I'm surprised nobody asked you just to make sure), you can pretty safely assume it's OK. If it doesn't go away in a couple weeks, though, you should consider going back.

Do you smoke? Including cigars, mary-jane, pipe...

Do you chew tobacco?

How long was the blister on your lip?

no tobacco. The canker sore had been there for about 10 days and I thought it had gone away when I went to the dentist on Saturday. the only thing I used that might have affected it was listerine this morning. I didn't notice the blister until a few hours later, and it got bigger at dinner when I had some chipotle sauce (didn't think it would affect it, now I know better). Well, if it doesn't drain naturally, I'm seeing the dentist again in 3 weeks for a tiny filling anyway.

Chances are the canker sore was reaggravated during BOTH dental treatment (whatever the sol'n was) and your mouthwash/chipotle. If you search the entire board for canker sores, you'll see a lot of various causes ranging from high concentration L-Argnine foods to things in toothpaste/soap (SLS).

I wouldn't worry too much. The dentist didn't make note of it, since oral lesions are easily noticed. Give the blister a week or two to go away. Word of advise, avoid spicy foods, nuts, chocolate, and harsh mouthwashes. When brushing, avoid traumatizing the sore any further (besides, we should brush gently anyway). Also, to keep it from being dramatically traumatized, look into canker sore medications. Particularly Colgate Sooth n Seal. It's pricey, but it acts like a skinless bandaid to protect the sore and allow it to heal...this is only IF the sore is a canker sore. Other products that seal the wound like Kanka and such also work well. They all run in the $5-$10 range.

Sounds like a mucocele, very common on the lower lip and can be caused by trauma like lip biting or a dental procedure. If the blister busted open and then crusted, i'm thinking herpes. Either way it's no big deal.
