Hi!

I am planning out how my application to MD schools and I have some things I am worried about EC-wise. Here are the details:

My freshman and sophomore years (@ HYP/Big three school) look blank until my sophomore summer, where I picked up a job doing cannabis vape R&D/product development with a large international vape brand based in Shenzhen. I really pushed safety standards here and this is something I want to highlight in my application, that I recognize that vape hardware in the US is scarcely researched and not as safe as in some other countries with proper regulations/emissions testing. Lots of peers using cannabis don't realize that smoking it will very likely cause health complications similar to tobacco and I want the vape alternative to be safer. I was also inspired by: 2019–2020 vaping lung illness outbreak - Wikipedia

Took a leave of absence this past year due to mental health and in that time I co-founded a hemp processing facility (to create a line of CBD products) and I am also doing non-profit work regarding drug addiction for the summer. The countless people that find relief from CBD for varying conditions (though I recognize that a lot of time quality research is lacking for these claims), plus its recent legalization in my own state pushed me to go for it.

I am really worried about the stigma against cannabis and how it will impact me. Any thoughts/guidance?

Thanks everyone
If you're serious about applying to medical school I wouldn't mention any of this on any part of your application. Medicine as a profession is fairly conservative in some ways, you would probably be taking a risk mentioning extracurriculars that involve cannabis, even if you're talking about CBD. Just my two cents.

You would have a hard time avoiding a Reject from my Adcom members.

My peanut gallery opinion is this: There is a bigger stigma in the medical community Re: vaping than there is for MJ, so I wouldn't be discussing having financial interest in vaping tech.

N=1 but I know about an applicant that worked as a safety researcher at a big vape company and got into an MD school. Ymmv

There was no medical “good” you were trying to progress with either of these two activities, especially with your later cbd efforts. As a ‘company’ you could have funded true peer review research for identifying health benefits as well as helping push industry regulation to ensure all THC is removed across all cbd products like it’s supposed to be. I thing you described sound like it could be seen in a positive light in an MD application.

The cover page story of my MD school for students this year as part of their welcome box was on the dangers of vaping. I really dont think you'll be looked at highly working with vape companies.
