Last summer, driving thru SW alaska, we stopped beside this shallow stream and there were hundreds and hundreds of pink salmon swimming upstream. they were decomposing as they swam, fins partially attached, skin peeling off, pink turning to grey, dead bodies of their comrades on either sides of them. most of them swam in a bit of a bunch, not really going anywhere but their efforts clearly apparent. a few individuals were noticeably farther upstream than the others. they looked lonely, but onward they swam, even though the stream eventually got too shallow for them to continue; i suppose a fish can't see such things from underwater. i asked my companion why they swam so hard in their last precious days (salmon season was rapidly ending, an autumn bite to the air) and he told me they were protecting the eggs they had laid. i shrugged, took some pictures, and we got back into the pickup to continue on our drive. those poor pink salmon. i wonder if they missed the ocean at their last.
