hello everyone, i have been a pre-dent for the last couple of years now. i feel that i am unsure if i will be disqualified due to a football injury many years ago. I detached the flexor tendon for the distal tip of my ring finger on my dominant hand. Due to this i cannot bend at the distal end, but am able to bend at the medial joint. I have been told that the first three digits are essential and that the ring finger is only used as a pivot or for stabilization. My injury has not prevented me from any activities... will i be alright as a dentist?

If you can hold maneuver a pencil, you can handle a drill.

It's OK. The index finger and thumb do most of the fine motor work depending on your technique. The middle finger adds a little bit more stability but I'm sure you can function without its use.

Most dentists rest their ring finger and pinky on the edge of the patient's mouth. The middle finger is added support for the index.

I actually use my pinky as the pivot point when I am handling a drill. It works pretty well!! You should try it!!!

It seems that using the pinky and the pinky&ring finger as a pivot point is what most dentists do. It eliminates the slight shakiness from supporting the weight of the drill/cord.

BTW, you should update your status to dental student peerless.

Hey Ry, what status are you talking about? Sorry for being slow on this matter but I really can't take a hint on this one

I believe he means your SDN status that says "Pre-Dental." But if my memory is correct you are an applicant for 2010 right? UoP?
