I want to just give some of my impressions of the CAP meeting in Phoenix that I just attended.
I was a delegate from Virginia for the residents forum. This was my first CAP meeting and first residents forum. It was great, I was able to talk to residents from all over the country. Hear what concerns they had about their programs and residency in general. The residents forum is a relatively powerful voice for residents and should be supported by us all. I would encourage everyone to get involved early in residency so you can have a chance to become an officer in the forum. Even if you don't you will have a chance to personally meet some of the biggest names in the field. (I was dancing with the president of the CAP on western theme night, it was a blast)
The residents forum invited the president of the American Board of Path to talk to us as well. We raked her over the coals with questions about the boards. She was great. She is new to the position so many of the things that have happened recently are not her fault and she seems to want to address the problems. (There was around a 60% pass rate on the path boards this last test.)
The CAP meeting is a much smaller affair than the USCAP and residents are treated much better in my opinion. The resort was beautiful. The CAP treated us like kings. They must have easily spent $200 per person on food, drinks, events etc... I did not pay for lunch or dinner any day I was there.
James Carville and Mary Matalin were speakers at the main reception. They were hysterical. I typically did not think much of him from seeing him on TV, but he was very funny in person.
The lectures were by some of the biggest names in the business. I went to Soft Tissue by Weiss, Prostate by Epstein, Non-neoplastic Lung- Colby and CP errors- Horowitz. The lectures I thought were much more practicle than the more academic/research lectures I attended at USCAP.
CAP>>>>>USCAP for the private practice minded person.
There were practices there actively looking for residents and programs actively looking for fellows.
This meeting is one I would highly highly recommend you going to especially the year before you graduate.
Maybe some others who went will comment on their thoughts.
Ask any questions you might have.
P.S.
Sorry all I have not been on much lately. I am chief this year and let me tell you it is a hard job. Hopefully it will slow down as the year goes along.
