doing research fellowship,
IV from UIC, UCLA, SUNY (stonybrook), MCG
Rejections? tons
My conclusion: If u r FMG in this game => u r a dead man!
GL🙂

Another guilty one of just reading and not contributing... here is my list..

IVs: MGH, Cleveland Clinic, Duke, UTSW, BIDMC, UPenn, UPitt, Mt. Sinai, Northwestern, Tufts-NEMC.
Rejects: JHU, Brigham, WashU, UW, UCSF, UCLA, Stanford, UCSD TexasHeart, Michigan, UChicago.

Still waiting: Cornell, Columbia, Mayo, (make up ur mind already!)

ITE - I also feel the burn of being an IMG... it makes the climb steeper because you are not eligible for NIH funding and program's have to pay your salary with money that comes from somewhere else... They also have a cap on the total number of fellows in all years that can have visas (so if there's 3-4 fellows already in the program with a visa you can pretty much forget about it even if you are a stellar candidate)
Im sure it makes a difference for some programs (not sure its a coincidence I didn't get invited to any of the 4 Cali programs and UCLA's STAR program won't let you apply if not a UScitizen) but definitely not for others...

Ignacio, that is a pretty strong list for an IMG. Can you post your credentials, visa status, if you dont mind....thanks

Interviews so far: UTSW, Baylor, Texas Heart, Kaiser, UWash, Indiana Univ, UT Houston

Wait List: Mayo Clinic

Rejection: tons

Being an FMG and H1b requirement brings me down

Its really tough..no IVs, tons of rejections..... just tough position.. with so many qualified candidates....even tougher with FMG

Hi Ignacio, Thanx for ur reply. Actually I have GC but I am FMG. U got great IVs, both the level of ur IVs and the numbers are so impressive, Im sure u did a superb job in research and residency. May I ask if u have a PhD or did post-doc(how many years?), do u have first author publication in Circ Res or JACC?
My problem is the level of my publications I think, I have 11 in pubmed and some book chapters and other publications but the level is like HEART, JICE,... What do you think? Please advise me.
Best of luck (although even w/o luck u definitely will get a great one),
Thanx

Was the BU rejection Email or Snail-Mail?

Hi guys -

Interview invite from Harbor-UCLA today.

If I didn't say it before, good luck to everyone. This process is definitely tedious and humbling.

Is it me or has this week been really slow. I got rejection from Umass memorial via snail mail. BU rejection by email.

This process has surely been humbling. This is bad enough as it is. I can't imagine doing this as an IMG. I give you guys props for your perserverance and dedication. Good luck.

This week has been agonizingly slow . . . I just hope that it's not a sign that interviews are coming to an end.

Interviews: Mt. Sinai (investigator), Northwestern, GW, Georgetown, MCV, UNC, UVA, Boston U, Pitt

Rejections: BWH, MGH, U. Chicago, BIDMC, Duke, Penn, UMD, Yale, Hopkins

Waiting on a few others

Punk: I have a J-1 visa (with the 2year home req after 7yrs), programs are more likely to interview you with it, as you are sponsored by ECFMG rather than the hospital itself. However H-1 is a lot more flexible and lets you apply for other stuff at the end. My creds: 2 yrs of research and MPH before residency, Top5 IM training program (but will not be chief), great mentor/research during IM training, 4 LORs, and 7 articles in low to mid-level journals (2 as 1st author but in crappy journals) 2 book chapters, oh and >95 on the 3 steps.
ITE: Sorry I made the assumption you were an IMG, the terms seem to be used indiscriminately in this forum, possibly because there are very few around (that post at least).
I would say there is absolutely nothing wrong with your number/level of publications... main thing is just that you are competing with a crapload of people. I believe many interviewers can really tell how involved you were on the actual work that produced the paper and more than your place on the list, it will be key to show that you know your stuff during the interview. Also helps to let them know where you are going and how youll get there.
Hopefully most programs can see that a 1st author paper on a top-tier journal is beyond the reach of many at this stage in the game...

Ignacio, thanks for ur reply. Just to clarify I am IMG too but have GC. Thanx again, best of luck

🙁I received many rejections but still many of the programs that other people have heard from them with IVs or rejections have not contaced me. Should I jsut exclude them thinking that they got tired of sending rejections? What do u guys say? Thanks

Folks...the ones who have IVs from good places..
Mind posting what you think has helped get IVs...trying to learn so I can improve my chances for the future...
Does research in clinical vs. basic matter for programs??.
Thanks

Interviews: 11.2%
Rejections: 33.6%

Interview at University of Cincinnati today via email.

Angio, from what I've seen the most important factors are

1) Coming from a well known university IM program
2) Published resaerch, the more the better - I don't think it matters so much clinical vs basic, as different programs seem to look for different things - but if clinical, should attempt to be prospective rather than chart review. Paper >> abstract or presentation in order of importance. Clearly being 1st author will put you significantly ahead as well.
3) Letter writers who are well known, and are willing to go to bat for you by making calls if needed. With so many well qualified applicants, I think that someone making a call for you even at the stage of getting an interview, can really help.
