Hi guys,

My long-term goal is to do a cardiology fellowship at Miami. I was wondering if doing residency at Miami as well would be beneficial. Do they favor their own? Could anyone shed some light on their preferences. Thanks!

Based on my experience, programs prefer people from the same program, same area, family in the area or if you are originally from the area, roughly in that order.

being at UM i can tell you there they deliberatly HAVENT taken theri IM residents, want big wigs with PHDs and Pubs from the NE and Midwest. Better to try and score a spot through USF or UF if FL is what you want.

Went to med school at Miami. The fellowship program does NOT take Miami IM residents.

Miami is good for cards if they are only into coronary interventions. Interventional Radiology at Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute are doing structure interventions such as percutaneous PFO closure and valve replacement.

Are u sure about this? I didnt see this when I interviewed there. Im pretty sure Cards do pretty much anything related to the heart.

I disagree.
If you want to match to the cardiology fellowship of your choice, go to the best IM residency program you can get into. Very unlikely that Miami cardiology would take its best IM resident over the best IM resident coming out of Hopkins, Duke, or MGH.
