Screwed around in undergrad and graduated with a sub-3.0 gpa in philosophy and religion. Worked as an assistant manager at Radioshack for 3 years while I took my pre-reqs. Graduating next month near the top of my class and starting a GPR at a VA hospital. It takes a lot of work, time, and sacrifice but it's so amazingly worth it if it's what you want to do!
Check out the "non-trad success stories" thread from December, shortly after people starting receiving acceptances. There are many great stories listed there.
I've been working as a business consultant for the past several years since graduating with a B.A. in economics, and I will be starting dental school this August. Making the change was tough but it can be done. I think it made me a unique applicant. Good luck.
Thank you all for your responses. Making such a drastic career change is very scary, but I feel that it is the right thing to do. It's good to know that I am not alone. 🙂
There are always obstacles along the way, but if you continue to stay focused and optimistic, you will make it happen.
Remember this, if you are able to work a full-time job while doing well on your science classes and on DAT, you get something in you that others have not yet developed.
Worked multiple jobs, sales associate at Radio Shack, House Keeper, and an Obituary typist. Will be starting dental school this July. It can be done, you just have to dig in and grab that will power.
