Hey guys! I'm in the middle of my EM/IM residency and have always dreamed of living in the islands. Anyone know the average salary? What about the hospitals? Where can I find information about this? Do they have underserved/loan repayment options? Thanks so much!!!

Most of those working in the Carib are retired MDs or professors, I doubt any loan repayment as they are not research institutions and are ALL for profit and get all there income from student tuition and try to minimize cost and increase income for the owners. You are better off opening a solo office in a developed Island like the Bahamas.

I have a related question. Let's say you graduate from SGU, what oppurtunities are they to teach at SGU on a part time bases...plus what is the pay like for the visiting faculty at these schools?

I'll tell ya what... After going to school down here if you want to live on an island I would live in the Florida keys.... It can get really 3rd world down here with all the power outs, internet outs, water outs all the time....

Hello, Have you ever lived on the islands like the other students and I have?

It's not paradise like going on vacation! Power outages, food shortages, Governments with budgets less then a Rural Small town in Appalachia.

You are kidding, Loan repayment? The docs there went to medical school for thousands not 10's or 100's of thousands, they get paid very little. You will be one of the more well off islander, but listen these people are really poor, we are talking 12 to 16,000 US a year at best with most making less then that.
Even the US companies that hire the locals there pay them a lot less then in the US, Why do you think outsourcing to the third world is so popular.

Puerto Rico a territory of the US is poor too, I would pick a part of the US you like and go. You will make thousands more and vacation in the Caribbean.

There is no loan repayment options in the islands. As far as medical practice and income goes, only Grand Cayman will give you an income close to those in the US. However, they require licensure and Board Certification from selected countries like US, UK, Canada.

come on old pro! Puerto Rico is not that poor...doctors get paid less than in the states, but better than in the rest of the carribean.
