Hi guys - psychiatrist here. Just venturing over to your neck of the woods as I was curious about career pathways for a colleague of mine who is recently graduating fellowship and is feeling a bit overwhelmed by the process.

At least for psych we have recruiters beating down our door multiple times a day. Are things more difficult to land cardiology jobs?

For cardiology, how are most people finding jobs? Is it possible to find long term locums jobs? What is typical locums hourly rates vs standard jobs paying for non interventional cards? Any specific recruiting companies you recommend?

It depends on the sub-specialty, but jobs are plentiful for general cardiology, even in major metro areas. A little bit more saturated for interventional, but you can easily find a job too. Structural is quite saturated, most places need only 2-3 to support the volume and CTS has dipped into doing TAVRs. Similarly, EP is pretty saturated but becoming more in demand due to increasing volumes for atrial fibrillation ablations. AHF is in some demand too, advanced imaging also but less so.

I don't think recruiters are that helpful. They seem to steer applicants to less desirable jobs that health systems want to fill quickly. Emailing places you are interested in is probably the best way to go. That being said, also using a recruiter won't hurt, just be aware that they are trying to make commission and so you really have to trust your gut. Asking around, particularly in your program leadership is more helpful. Overall, having a diverse strategy will help you land the best job possible.

Locums in cardiology isn’t as hot as you would think in re: to pay vs our value.

Job market is extremely hot for everything besides IC structural so stick to that. It won’t be hard at all

That's great to hear. He for some reason thought it was going to be difficult..what's a good starting salary right out not fellowship in coastal California?

Most I know found jobs via networking or cold-calling. IMO, that's how the better jobs are found. Recruiters would be at the bottom of my list. Coastal California is highly competitive. Hopefully your colleague is putting in more effort than you are on his behalf. He can start by talking to co-fellows, alumni, attendings, reps, etc.

Don’t know that market well but things are pretty standardized in the west. I would guess 600-650k
