hows it goin guys? i just graduated undergrad school and am attending my first professional year of pharmacy this fall. i decided that i would join these forums and after reading around a bit, not too sure what to think. whats up with the talk about the job prospectives for this career going downhill? from what ive researched, its still looking good for the next couple of years (up to 2016, and im assuming at that time its not going to come to a sudden halt), and i also might add that the salary for various kinds of pharmacists isnt too shabby... whats there not to be happy about? obviously the economy is going downhill, but i feel pharmacy is still one of the more promising careers. any input guys? thanks.

Yes. I would like to introduce you to the search function. It is a wonderous tool created so new members who have questions can use it instead of posting the same questions or comments a thousand times. Your new so take some time with it. Get to know and love it. Most everything you would like to know has been asked or commented on about a 100 times.

Like any other job, it will go through cycles of supply and demand. The current economy is not helping because it has semi-caused Walgreens/CVS to slow expansion.

Personally, I think that the opening of new schools will have a much larger impact on the profession. This of course will not happen for the next 3-5 years. So who knows.

The problem is, new schools are opening up left and right. A few new schools opening was very helpful what with the Wags and CVS expansions and all, but it spiraled out of control real quick. Many studies that paint the picture of there being a dire need of pharmacists everywhere don't take into consideration the fact that the number of pharmacy schools has damn near doubled in the past decade. There seems to be no sign of schools slowing down that trend, either.

I wonder if employees are going to start looking at those new schools and see them as diploma mills and give students from more established pharmacy schools more consideration. Or they would just use this to lower wages. Walgreens/CVS might but I'm hoping that hospitals (where I want to work as a clinical pharmacists) understand that not all pharmacy schools are the same.

I'm sure everyone hopes that would be the case. But nevertheless, b/c supply is greater than demand, I'm sure lower wages would be one of the result.

Corporate retail will use the surplus of students coming from low-tier schools as a way to lower salaries.

Hospitals usually have a small preference for graduates of certain schools that they hire from. Chains can care less. . .

thank you mountainpharmd, your post has opened up my eyes. i had no idea that this forum had a search button, who would have thought? as long as it gets one informative reply, i consider the thread not wasted.

anyways, ya i guess it makes sense that the opening of all these new schools would 'endanger' the profession. im just hoping that a lot more of the danger is from an economic standpoint, and that it will hopefully gradually get better. and with the expansion of all of the retail stores, theyre going to need the increase of pharmacy students, which is what seems to be the case here... so maybe salaries won't change too dramatically. also, considering people are going to be living longer and longer soon reaching the mid 100s, healthcare is always going to be an awesome field right?? ha heres to hoping.

Once Obama gets his commie health plan thing going, we'll be in huge demand again. Yippee, Comrades!

Its my opinion that the health reform could create a new shortage that will make the last one look like peanuts by comparison. I mean, if the US healthcare system gains 15% more patients, who's to say the # of pharmacists required isnt going to go up by 4-5% .. which would entail creation of maybe 10,000 new jobs?? Wasnt that about where we were at the peak of the shortage??

I hope that it doesn't make an impact on our profession because right now I'm not even in college. I'm going to be a senior in High School, and by the time I finished Pharmacy school, I'm hoping I can get a decent job.

What is it...40 million uninsured people in the US? Hells yeah...

Hi Stevephhs016
I noticed that you just recently graduated from USP PCP 09

How is the school USP viewed in terms of the pharmacy/pharmaceutical industry world?
Is it one of the most reputable Pharm schools? unlike the new ones that are popping up

btw imma noob at this. im still a HS senior
gonna be applying to 0-6 next year
really leaning toward USP/URI/MPCHS

Finish high school first, then get back to us.

Please stop creating new threads until you get rid of that ridiculous name and select something less 1995-esque.
