Hey,

Were any Canadians at Irish schools successful at matching through CaRMS this year?

cheers, canucker

hey there,

i know about a few people who were successful. two very good friends of mine who are graduating from trinity this year got spots in canada; one guy in family medicine at the university of alberta, and another guy got a spot in anesthesia at memorial in newfoundland. that is pretty exciting because specialty spots are hard to come by. a girl at my school (ucd) got a spot in family medicine at u of A also, and another guy i know at trinity is doing family med at queens. there is also a girl at trinity (i've been told) who got radiation oncology at u of t or somewhere in ontario, but she apparently had connections big time nad was actually a rad onc technologist before doing medicine so she had a lot of experience, really solid electives etc. so things are looking up. oh yeah, another guy in the trinity group of people i know got family med at saskatchewan. the thing i heard from all of them during their interviews was that the program directors are eager to get back canadians who trained in ireland and they certainly look upon us more favourably than other IMG's.

the good thing is that I've been hearing that Canada is opening up for more IMG spots...

the bad news is most of that is still for family medicine...and many in rural areas. I guess we shouldn't be complaining too much eh? Just be glad that they're even giving us a chance...

I was talking to a couple of Canadians here in Ireland who are starting the process of matching the other day and realized something interesting:

Before they started, all of them assumed they wanted to go back to Canada when they finished. But now, some of them are in the top parts of their class and have done very well on the USMLE's. It seems to them that their choices are doing fam med in a rural area or doing a specialty in the US. To me, it seemed like the only people who had the marks to go back to Canada are now deciding to do what they're interested in and are applying to the US.

Kind of depressing. If you have your heart set on family med then that's great but it sucks that if you work your ass off and want to do something different it's still so hard to go back to your own country.

But I think that's one of the things that makes America such a super power. They've always stolen the best people in every profession from everywhere else in the world. Wish Canada would give more of a reward to successful Canadians studying abroad! Actually, I just wish they'd open up the match like America has and let residency directors decide for themselves. It's seemed to work fine in America.
